Installing Timbuktu Pro Results in an Error Message When Novell Client is Installed

TP2000_018

Situation:

Installing Timbuktu Pro results in an error message when Novell client is installed. See error below:

  • Maybe the TCP/IP protocol has not been installed?
  • Maybe the network was not initiated?
  • Maybe the Winsock.dll was not installed, not found, or not the correct version?

This error message occurs because the Novell client swaps out Microsoft's Msgina.dll and submits its own gina.ll in replacement. The Msgina.dll file interacts with the Winlogon service to provide the Welcome screen and the Fast User Switching feature. Third-party software can replace the current Graphical Identification and Authentication data with their own Graphical Identification and Authentication data. The Fast User Switching feature and the Microsoft Welcome Screen are not available if you are using a third-party product that replaces the Microsoft Graphical Identification and Authentication file (Msgina.dll). Timbuktu Pro does not recognize the replacement file and assumes that the Fast User Switching and Welcome Screen settings are still enabled and continues to run Mini TB2.

Solution:

Go to the following registry key and change the following setting, then reboot the machine to apply this setting.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

LogonType = 0

This means use the normal NT login screen. If LogonType is changed to zero, Timbuktu Pro should behave properly when using the Novell client.
