When attempting to install Timbuktu Pro, a user may receive an error message stating that there was an error installing the Timbuktu Pro remote control components
This error message can mean a number of things:
-
Typically it is because you have some other remote control component installed on your system. This can include PCAnywhere, Carbon Copy, Laplink, LanDesk (included with SMS). You would need to completely remove these applications before Timbuktu Pro can be installed.
To check if this is the case, please follow these directions:
- Clicking the Start button on the task Bar and select Run
- In the field provided, type regedt32 and click enter
-
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\DeviceMap\Video
In the right-hand window the first listing should look like this:
\Device\Video0:REG_SZ:\REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet001\Services\STB\Device 0
The 2 values that may be different for each machine are the ControlSet reference and the Video reference, in this case STB.
At this point, you should follow the path found in the Video Device Map. - Once at Device0, you should double click on the Installed Display Drivers Listing in the right-hand window.
-
This will bring up the Multi-String editor. In it, you should see the driver for your video card. If you have any of the entries please delete them.

- Once they have been deleted, close the registry and reboot.
-
This error message could mean that you are not logged in with Administrative rights on the system you are wanting to install to. Timbuktu Pro does require rights to install to the system directory. If these privileges are not available to the logged in user, then the installation will be aborted.
-
This error message could be related to the anti-virus software you have installed. While it is intended to protect your system, often it does interfere with software installations. Try disabling the anti-virus software and retry the Timbuktu Pro installation.
-
If none of these are listed, please try a clean uninstall of Timbukutu Pro components that may have been partially installed. This will also remove any older or evaluation versions that you may have had installed. Timbuktu Pro can often "trip" over itself and give this error message. Directions for this can be found at the following URL:
- Once the above steps have been done, please disable any anti-virus software that you may have running.
- Next, go to the Timbuktu Pro setup directory (that was created when you expanded the installer).
- Once there, double-click the file titled "Netinstaller". This will cause a DOS window to open and close. You then should see hard drive activity indicating that Timbuktu Pro is installing in the background. Hopefully you should then get a success message indicating that Timbuktu Pro was successfully installed.
