Clean Installation

TPM_035

Clean installation instructions for Timbuktu Pro - Macintosh Edition.

Problem:

Timbuktu Pro may not be operating properly due to previous or improper installations.

Situation:

To ensure proper operation Timbuktu Pro may require a clean or fresh installation.

Solution:

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OS 8.6-9.x

  1. Restart your Macintosh with the Shift key held down until the "Extensions Off" message is displayed.

  2. Run the Timbuktu Pro Installer from the Timbuktu Pro CD or from the downloaded Timbuktu file.

  3. From the installation screen, select "Custom Remove" from the "Easy Install" pop-up menu. Select all the components listed and click the Remove button and restart your Mac.

  4. After the installer removes the files and the system has been restarted, choose 'Find' from the 'File' menu, and type in "timbuktu". Select the files found, and drag them to the trash. Now do the same for files by the name "tb2" and "netopia", trashing any files found.

  5. Empty the trash.

NOTE: If you plan to reinstall from a downloaded copy of Timbuktu on this same system, be careful not to trash that file. If you have trashed it, drag it from the trash before you empty the trash.

  6. Reinstall by running the Timbuktu Pro Installer from the Timbuktu Pro CD or the from the downloaded Timbuktu file. You will have to re-enter your registered users and passwords and reselect preference settings as necessary.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OS X

  1. Log on to your Macintosh as an administrator.
  2. Drag the Timbuktu Pro application folder to the trash.
  3. Next, open the Mac OS X volume, open the Library folder, open the StartupItems folder, and drag the TimbuktuStartup folder to the trash.
  4. Within Library:Preferences, trash the Netopia preferences folder.
  5. Restart your computer.

Summary:

When Timbuktu is not running properly, it may be because there are files from more than one version of Timbuktu on the system or because one or more Timbuktu files have become corrupted. In these cases, it may be necessary to do a 'clean install' of Timbuktu. A clean install deletes all existing Timbuktu files from the system, ensuring that all remnants of previous versions of Timbuktu have been removed from the system and that a new 'clean' version is installed.
