Deployment of a Windows software package with the netOctopus SDS fails with an authentication error or insufficient access error message in the DCS log.

NTO_037

Problem:

This problem occurs because the username and password combination supplied in the Staging Server dialog does not have read permission to the staging server or these credentials do not have sufficient privileges to install software on the Agent computer.

Solution:

When an Agent contacts the netOctopus DCS server, the DCS server replies with the staging server and package information needed to download the package over the network and install it. The username and password combination supplied in the Staging Server dialog is used to authenticate with the staging server hosting the software package to be installed. In addition, the same account information will be used to install software on the Agent computer. As a result, make sure the username and password you enter in the Staging Server dialog is valid on all of your staging servers and Agent machines. On the staging servers verify that this set of credentials is authorized to access the share specified in the Volume field of the Software Package dialog that the software to be installed is hosted on. On the Agent computers make sure that this set of credentials has administrative privileges to install software if they are running Windows NT/2000/XP.

If your Agent computers reside in a domain environment enter the username and password of a domain account with admin privileges in the Staging Server dialog. The simplest way to ensure this is to add the specified domain account to the Domain Admins group and make sure that this group part of the local Administrators group on all client computers. Then enter the domain that the staging server resides in into the Windows NT domain field.

If your Agent computers reside in a workgroup instead of a domain environment, specify the username and password of a local administrator account and enter the workgroup name in the Windows NT domain field of the Staging Server dialog instead. This local administrator account must exist on both the staging servers and the Agent computers. In addition to this, they must also share the same exact password. Do NOT leave the Windows NT domain field blank because it will cause the software deployment process to fail.

To help you troubleshoot authentication errors with the netOctopus DCS on Windows NT/2000/XP Agents, the following table of resulting DCS Log messages are provided below. These messages appear in the Message column of the right-hand data panel when Distribution Center Log is selected in the left-hand navigation panel. These messages are current as of netOctopus 5.1.
