Agent receives error "NASPWN16 caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown> XXXXX NASPWN16 will close."

NTO_035

Problem:

On startup or when contacted by the Administrator, the Agent machine receives the error "NASPWN16 caused a General Protection Fault in module <unknown> XXXXX NASPWN16 will close."

Situation:

On some special hardware platforms, the Windows Agent may receive the error on startup or when contacted by the Administrator. We have encountered this issue with certain motherboards. On NT based systems, the Agent is still active and responsive after the error, after the user dismisses the error dialog box. On Windows 9x systems, the Agent is no longer active.

Solution:

This issue can be resolved by making a change to the registry settings. Here are the steps:

  1. For the registry key below, create a new DWORD entry with value "1" HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Netopia\netOctopus\Agent\DontMakePNPBiosCalls
  2. Restart the machine
You can also force the creation of the registry key during the installation of the PC Agent by adding a file called settings.ini to the same directory where netOctopus PC Agent setup application is located. In this text file add the following two lines:

[Variables]
0=DontMakePNPBiosCalls||1

Please note that an effect of this registry change is that the BIOS version and BIOS vendor information may not be gathered by netOctopus.
