Sending any commands an Agent results in the error "The machine address '(IP address of the machine)' is not identical with the entry in the database. See Technote NTO_032"

NTO_032

Situation:

When sending commands to an Agent results in the error "The machine address '(IP address of the machine)' is not identical with the entry in the database. See Technote NTO_032" A yellow triangle with an exclamation mark will appear next to the Agent in question.

Cause:

This error message is a new feature implemented in netOctopus 4.2 to help resolve duplicate Agent entries. This feature will require both Administrator and Agent to be at least version 4.2. The error message is a result of two or more Agent entries sharing the same IP address but having different netOctopus Agent Serial Numbers. The following conditions will trigger the error message:

  • The Agent was reinstalled. Reinstalling will create a new netOctopus Agent Serial Number.
  • The machine has multiple boots with the Agent installed with the same IP address. The Agent in each boot has a different netOctopus Agent Serial Number.
  • Your machines are on DHCP and they have been assigned new IP addresses since the last scan.

For some techniques on how to keep track of Agents with frequently-changing IP addresses consult the following How to Guide http://www.netopia.com/support/howtodocs/netoctopus/dhcpagent.html

Note: Commands may still be performed on the unintended machine that is currently using the IP address that you sent the command to.

Summary:

Sending commands to an Agent results in the error "The machine address '(IP address of the machine)' is not identical with the entry in the database. See Technote NTO_032" if there are multiple entries sharing the same IP address that have different netOctopus Agent Serial Numbers.
