Installing Files to Certain Directories on OS X may yield error "File not found. (ID=-43)"

NTO_031

Problem:

Installing files to certain directories on OS X, such as /usr/bin may yield the error "Command 'Install' error: File not found (ID=-43)"

Situation:

Apple has chosen to hide certain directories in the File System on OS X. Therefore if you select the following from the Install command window, the Finder will not recognize this directory.

Solution:

To install in a specific location that is hidden from the Apple File System you must type in the direct path. (See below)

You can also get the direct path by dragging and dropping the file that you want to install into the desired directory through the Volume Browser in the Individual Computers window. This will automatically open the Install command window with the path pre-populated into the Path field.

Summary:

Installing files into directories that are hidden from the Finder must use the direct path with the Use Path Only option in the Install command window.
