Using the "Server Installation" option to perform a custom installation

NTO_009

Using the "Server Installation" option to perform a custom installation of the netOctopus Agent may cause the active Agent to be overwritten. A server installation is typically used when an administrator wants to automatically install the PC Agent using a login script.

Problem:

When performing a server installation of the Agent, if the default directory is chosen, the active Agent may become corrupted. This is because the files for the active Agent that is currently installed are being overwritten by the files for the new server installation of the Agent. This will render the Agent unreachable by the netOctopus Administrator.

Solution:

The netOctopus Agent custom installation allows you to select the "Server Installation" option. However, two screens before you reach the window that allows you to choose this option, you must select a directory to install the Agent to. If you accept the default destination directory, the active Agent files will be overwritten with the inactive Agent files, thus rendering that machine unreachable by the netOctopus Administrator. To avoid this problem when performing a server installation, make sure you change the installation directory to one other than the default.

Summary:

When doing a server installation of the netOctopus Agent, change the installation path to something other than the default. If the destination directory is left to the default, the active Agent files will be overwritten, thus rendering the machine unreachable by the netOctopus Administrator.
