How to establish a TCP/IP connection to a system behind a Zone Alarm firewall

The software firewall known as Zone Alarm is blocking TCP/IP connections to the host computer. Zone Alarm is a software application that performs the functions of a firewall, by protecting the computer it is installed on from intruders on the Internet. For security reasons, Zone Alarm Firewall has been installed. Without the proper configuration in Zone Alarm Timbuktu will be unable to access the host computer. All outbound connections will be enabled, however, inbound connections will be blocked by the firewall.

Steps to take to ensure a Timbuktu Pro connection

Configure Zone Alarm to allow Timbuktu access to the Internet.

  • After the installation of Zone Alarm, when the computer reboots, you will be prompted to allow the application Timbuktu to access the Internet.
  • Select "yes" and check the box remember this. If you do not check this box, you may configure Zone Alarm for access, but when a person attempts to connect you will be prompted to either Allow or Disallow the connection. Either way, the connecting node of Timbuktu will halt and wait for a response before the connection is established.
  • Click on the tab labeled "Programs", make sure that the application Timbuktu is checked under the column labeled "Allow Server". By putting a red check in the box labeled "Internet" both boxes, Internet and Local, will be checked. This tells Zone Alarm that Timbuktu is a "friendly" application.
  • Next, click on the Tab labeled "Security" and ensure that the Internet slider is at High security and the local zone slider is at Medium.

Configuring Zone Alarm to allow inbound Timbuktu Pro connections

This next step will depend on whether or not the connecting IP address is static or dynamic. A static address is an IP address that does not change. A dynamic address is an IP address that refreshes after a designated period of time, or each time the computer is rebooted, or reconnects to the Internet.

If the address that will be connecting is static:

  • Go to the Security panel
  • Click on the Advanced button
  • Within this window, click the Add button and choose IP Address
  • Enter description (i.e. Stephanie's PC)
  • Enter the IP Address. (i.e. 127.0.0.1)
  • Click OK to save

If the address that will be connecting is a dynamic address then, within Zone Alarm:

  • Click on the tab called "Internet" and ensure that the Internet security is set to Medium. This will allow any Timbuktu node to contact the computer and be authenticated using Timbuktu's security features.
