This brief guide is intended to help first time users of Timbuktu Pro quickly set up and establish a TCP/IP connection between two PC's. This is by no means a definitive guide. There are alternate ways of establishing a Timbuktu Pro TCP/IP connection. This guide only presents one of them.
Note: Both the guest and the host must be connected to the Internet in order for you to make the connection. This could be either through a dial-up ISP, ISDN, Cable Modem, LAN or DSL connection.
Timbuktu Pro for the PC does not require a static IP address. Timbuktu Pro now supports finding other Timbuktu users who do not have a static IP address by typing in their email address or machine name. These features are supported if your Timbuktu node is registered with our LDAP or IL server.
If you have firewalls or routers that prohibit incoming access, please refer to our How to connect to a system behind a router running Network Address Translation (NAT) document.
The host system is the machine that is going to be controlled.
Adding a Registered User on the host
- Select Security from the Setup menu.
- Click on the Registered Users tab.
- Check all the privileges you want this Registered User to have.
- Enter in a username and password that you want this user to login with.
- Click OK to save the changes to the registered user.
Entering an Email Address
(This step is only necessary for users with a dial-up Internet connection that assigns a dynamic IP address).
- Select Preferences from the Setup menu.
- Select the General Tab.
- Under the Email Locator section, check the "Internet Locator Enabled" box.
- In the field below the check box, enter in the email address in which you would like visitors to connect to you with.
- Click OK to save the changes to your IP Locator Preferences.
- When the guest is ready to connect to the host machine, select the TCP/IP tab.
- From within the TCP/IP section, enter in the IP address or email address in the TCP/IP address field.
- From the menu bar, select a service (such as Send, Exchange, Control, or Look) with which you wish to open a session with the host PC.
- A login prompt will appear once Timbuktu Pro has connected to the host.
- Within the login box, either enter in the username and password that you set up for yourself within the Registered User Security window or chose Ask for Permission.
- Once you have been authenticated, a window will open up for the service that you selected
