How to modify the Timbuktu Pro for Windows IP Scanner

This document purpose is to assist users with modifying the Timbuktu Pro for Windows IP Scanner.

As of Version 7.0 of Timbuktu Pro for Windows, there is now an integrated Timbuktu Pro Scanner that can be used to scan your network for machines that have Timbuktu installed AND running. This utility scans for both Windows and Macintosh Timbuktu users. To access the scanner, open the main Timbuktu window by double-clicking the Timbuktu icon in the System Tray, or by right-clicking the Timbuktu icon in the System Tray and selecting Open. From the Menu Titles select Connections'Timbuktu Pro Scanner.

The Timbuktu Scanner will open in a separate window and immediately begin scanning your local subnet and populating the scanner window with machines found. The list can be sorted alphabetically (ascending or descending) by clicking on the Computer Name category title. Machines can also be sorted by IP Address (ascending or descending) by clicking the IP Address category title. To initiate a connection to a machine in the list, simply right-click the machine name and select a Timbuktu service from the pop-up menu.

To save the scan list, simply click the Save button, name the file and pick a directory to save it to. The file format is .tbk, which is the Timbuktu for Windows Address Book format. Once saved, you can point to this file from within Timbuktu for Windows and it can be read from the Address Books tab. Refer to Timbuktu's Help for instructions on how to do this.

If you are on a network that contains multiple subnets that you would like to scan, you can create a zones file that contains references to each of those subnets. ***NOTE: Timbuktu Pro for Windows cannot use the zones file from Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh. The file and data formats are different. To create a zones file, do the following:

  1. Create a new text document and name it tb2scan.ini (**NOTE: this file must be placed in the Program Files\Timbuktu Pro folder)
  2. On the first line create the following Section Header - [Netscan]
  3. On the second line start listing the different subnets using one of the following three methods:
    • Subnet Broadcast = 192.168.1.0,192.168.1.255 - this method scans the entire subnet
    • IP Range = 192.168.1.2,192.168.1.120 - this method scans a range of IP addresses within a subnet
    • Direct IP = 192.168.1.3 - this method scans for the machine assigned the specified IP Address

    Making sure to reference each subnet on a separate line, in numerical order. The format of the listing must begin with an entry number and equal sign (=). Here is an example tb2scan.ini file:

    EXAMPLE TB2SCAN.INI FILE

    [Netscan]
    Entry1=192.168.2.0,192.168.2.255
    Entry2=192.168.1.200,192.168.1.254
    Entry3=192.168.1.3,192.168.1.3

    **NOTE: The only text that can be customized are the IP addresses themselves. The section header Netscan and subnet listing titles Entry1=, Entry2=, etc... must not be changed. Also note that the presense of a semicolon (;) will comment out any text directly following it on the same line, so it will be ignored by the scanner.

  4. Close the file and save the changes.
  5. Place the file in the Program Files\Timbuktu Pro folder.
