This brief guide is intended to help first time users of Timbuktu Pro quickly set up and establish a Dial Direct connection between two Windows computers. This is by no means a definitive guide. There are alternate ways of establishing a Timbuktu Pro Dial Direct connection. This guide presents only one of them. Within the context of this guide the Host is always the PC that is accepting the incoming Dial Direct call and the Guest is always the PC that is making the outgoing Dial Direct call.
Adding a Registered User on the Host
- Select Security from the Setup menu.
- Click on the Registered Users tab.
- Check all the privileges you want this Registered User to have.
- Enter the username and password that you want this user to login with.
-
Click OK to save the changes to the registered user.

The Dial Direct tab lets you use your modem to dial directly into the modem of a remote computer. No network connection is required.
Note: The Dial Direct tab appears only if a Windows recognized modem is installed in your computer.
To establish a connection using the Dial Direct tab
- In the main Timbuktu Pro window, click the Dial Direct tab.
- Choose a country from the Country Code drop-down list. (This list is maintained by the Windows OS.)
- Enter the area code in the Area Code box. If you do not enter an area code, Timbuktu Pro assumes that you are making a local call and will not dial an area code.
- Enter the phone number in the Phone Number box.
- The complete phone number is displayed at the Dial line exactly as it will be dialed.
- Choose Dial to dial the number and begin a Dial Direct connection. The Modem Status dialog box helps you monitor your connection.
- Once the connection is established, you may launch any Timbuktu Pro service normally, except Intercom. All services work in the same way as they do over a TCP/IP connection.
Note: By default, Timbuktu Pro will not answer Dial Direct calls into your computer. If you wish to accept Dial Direct connections, you must change your Dial Direct options on the Dial Direct tab in the Preferences dialog box.
