How to Establish a TCP/IP Connection to a System Behind an SMC Router

This brief guide is intended to help first time users of Timbuktu Pro quickly set up and establish a connection between two machines over TCP/IP through a SMC Barricade router running Network Address Translation. This is by no means a definitive guide. There are alternate ways of establishing a Timbuktu Pro TCP/IP connection. This guide only presents one of them.

How to connect to a machine behind a SMC Barricade router:

  1. Activate your browser, and disable the proxy or add the IP address of the SMC product into the exceptions.
  2. Then type this product's IP address in the Location (for Netscape) or Address (for Explorer) field and press ENTER. For example: http://192.168.123.254. After the connection is established, you will see the web user interface. There are two appearances of the web user interface: for general users and for system administrator. To log in as an administrator, enter the system password (the factory setting is "admin") in the System Password field and click the Log in button. If the password is correct, the web appearance will be changed into administrator configure mode. As listed in its main menu, there are several options for system administration.
  3. Select Virtual Servers from the Administrator's Main Menu.

  4. Under Private IP enter the IP address of your machine that you want to connect to.
  5. Under Private Port, enter 407.
  6. Under Type, select UDP, if this is a connection where a Windows machine is involved. Selected TCP if this is a Mac to Mac connection only .
  7. Under Public Port, enter 407.
  8. If you have a Windows host machine or will connect from a Windows machine, repeat steps 4 through 7, adding numbers 1417, 1418, 1419, and 1420 as the Service Port number. The Type should read TCP on ports 14170-1420.
  9. Click Enter to save settings.
