This brief guide is intended to help first time users of Timbuktu Pro quickly set up and establish a connection between two machines over TCP/IP through a D-Link router running Network Address Translation. This is by no means a definitive guide. There are alternate ways of establishing a Timbuktu Pro TCP/IP connection. This guide only presents one of them.
Choose your router model below for configuration steps:
- DI-514, DI-524, DI-604, DI-614+, DI-624, DI-704P (revC), DI-704UP, DI-754, DI-764, DI-774, DI-784
- DI-704P (revB), DI-707P, DI-714P+, DI-804HV, DI-808HV, and DI-824VUP
- DI-704, DI-704P (revA), DI-707, DI-711 (revA), DI-713, and DI-713P
- DI-711 (revB), DI-714, DI-804, and DI-804V
- DFL-80 and DFL-300
DI-514, DI-524, DI-604, DI-614+, DI-624, DI-704P (revC), DI-704UP, DI-754, DI-764, DI-774, and DI-784:
Step 1 Open your web browser and enter the IP address of your D-Link router (192.168.0.1). Enter username (admin) and your password (blank by default).
Step 2 Click on the Advanced tab at the top and then click Virtual Server on the left side.

Step 3 Check Enabled to activate entry.
Step 4 Enter a name for your virtual server entry.
Step 5 Next to Private IP, enter the IP address of the computer on your local network that you want to allow the Timbuktu incoming service to.
How can I find the IP address of my computer?
Step 6 Choose Protocol Type - Both for 407, TCP for 1417 through 1420 and other ports if you changed the contact port on a Mac host.
Step 7 Enter the port information next to Private Port and Public Port. The private and public ports that you will enter are the same. The public port is the port seen from the WAN side, and the private port is the port being used by the application on the computer within your local network.
Step 8 Select "Always" for Schedule information.
Step 9 Click Apply and then click Continue.
To connect to this Timbuktu host, enter in the external/WAN IP address of this router within the TCP/IP field located in the New Connection window on the guest (controlling/intiating) system. If you are not sure what the external IP of the router is, go to http://www.findmyip.com from the Timbuktu host machine. - How do I open a range of ports if the router's firewall is enabled?
DI-704P (rev.B), DI-707P, DI-714P+, DI-804HV, DI-808HV, and DI-824VUP:
Step 1 Open a web browser and enter the IP address of your router (192.168.0.1). Enter admin for your username and then your password (blank by default).
Step 2 Click on the Advanced tab and then Virtual Server on the left side.
Step 3 Enter the following information:- Check the box next to Enable.
- Next to Service Ports, enter the port or range of ports you want to open. One entry for 407, another entry for 1417-1420 and any other ports that you might have used if you changed the contact port on a Mac host.
- Next to Service IP, enter the IP address of the computer you want to open the port(s) to.
- Click Always next to Schedule or enter the time frame that you want.
Step 4 Click Apply and then click Restart to save your changes.

To connect to this Timbuktu host, enter in the external/WAN IP address of this router within the TCP/IP field located in the New Connection window on the guest (controlling/intiating) system. DI-704, DI-704P (rev. A), DI-707, DI-711, DI-713, and DI-713P:
Step 1 Open your web browser and enter the IP address of the router (192.168.0.1). Enter user name (admin) and your password (blank by default). If there is only 1 box, enter admin.
Step 2 Click on Advanced at the bottom and then click Virtual Server.
Step 3 Create a new entry:- Enter the port or range of ports you want to open in the box under Service Ports. One entry for 407, another entry for 1417-1420 and any other ports that you might have used if you changed the contact port on a Mac host.
- Enter the IP address of the computer you want to open the ports to.
- Check the box under Enable.

Step 4 Click Save and then click Reboot.
To connect to this Timbuktu host, enter in the external/WAN IP address of this router within the TCP/IP field located in the New Connection window on the guest (controlling/intiating) system. If you are not sure what the external IP of the router is, go to http://www.findmyip.com from the Timbuktu host machine.
DI-711 (revB), DI-714, DI-804, and DI-804V:
Step 1 Open your web browser and enter the IP address of your D-Link router (192.168.0.1).
Step 2 Click on the Advanced Settings tab and then select Virtual Server from the left side.

Step 3 Enter the last three digits of your IP address on the field provided and then enter the range of ports that would like to allow in. If you would only like one port to be opened, then enter the same number in each box.For example:407 ~ 407
1417 ~ 1420
Step 4 Click Submit and then Save and Restart when prompted.
Note: If your router does not allow you to enter ports, please upgrade the firmware at support.dlink.com/downloads.To connect to this Timbuktu host, enter in the external/WAN IP address of this router within the TCP/IP field located in the New Connection window on the guest (controlling/intiating) system. If you are not sure what the external IP of the router is, go to http://www.findmyip.com from the Timbuktu host machine.
DFL-300 or DFL-80:
Step 1 Access the configuration screen of the DFL-300 by opening a web browser such as Internet Explorer and type the IP address of the DFL-300 in the address bar (192.168.1.1).
Step 2 Enter the username (admin) and the password (admin). Click OK.

Step 3 Click on Service which is located on the left column and then click Custom.

Step 4 Click on New Entry
Step 5 In the Service NAME field enter a name or "Timbuktu" for your custom service.
Step 6 Under the protocol field next to #1 choose whether the service is to use TCP or UDP. UDP for 407 and TCP for 1417 through 1420 and other ports if you changed the contact port on a Mac host.

Step 7 The Client Port should be left at 1024:65535 as this range is used by the firewall and if modified will cause the custom service not to function properly.
Step 8 The Server Port is where you need to specify the port or range of ports that is needed for this custom service.For example:
407 : 407
1417 : 1420

Step 9 Repeat steps 6 through 8 on line #2 to enter the ports 1417 through 1420.
Step 10 When you have completed entering the needed port numbers click OK to save this information.
Step 11 Then on the configuration screen, click on Virtual Server, located on the left column.
Step 12 Click on Virtual Server 1.

Step 13 Click on Click Here To Configure, choose the IP address assigned to you by your ISP as your Vitrual Server Real IP, and click OK.

Step 14 Click on New Service.
Step 15 In the drop down menu next to Service Name choose the custom service you have just created in steps 1 through 10 for Timbuktu. It will be listed last in the list.

Step 16 In the first box under Server Virtual IP, enter in the IP address of the computer you want the selected service forwarded to and click OK.

Step 17 Click on Policy, located on the left column, and choose Incoming.

Step 18 Click on New Entry.
Step 19 Choose Virtual Server 1 for the Destination Address and choose the service you specified in Virtual Server 1 entry as the Service.

Step 20 Verify the Action is set to Permit and click OK
