How to Establish a TCP/IP Connection to a System Behind an Asante Router

This brief guide is intended to help first time users of Timbuktu Pro quickly set up and establish a connection between two machines over TCP/IP through an Asante router running Network Address Translation. This is by no means a definitive guide. There are alternate ways of establishing a Timbuktu Pro TCP/IP connection. This guide only presents one of them.

  1. Start your web browser. Type http://192.168.123.254 Into your browser's address or location field and press Enter.
  2. In a few moments you'll see the Login screen for the router. Enter admin (the default password) and click Log in.
  3. Click the Security button from the top of the page.
  4. Scroll down until you see Distributed Servers menu. It should look similar to this:

  5. Enter in the Timbuktu Pro Contact port/ports (407, 1417 -1420) under the "Service Port" menu.
  6. Enter in the remaining octets, of the internal TCP/IP address, assigned to the machine that you wish to connect on the LAN.
  7. Select Enable and Apply in order to save new settings.
Note: If you are configuring your router to allow more then 1 Timbuktu Pro contact port, it is highly recommended that you use multiple service port menus in order to do so. If you are still unable to successfully establish a inbound Timbuktu Pro connection to a host system, please contact Asante for further assistance.

Things that can prohibit the above setup from working:

If you have made changes to other parts of your router, these changes can override your listings in the Distributed Servers setup. Please make sure that the following information is also setup correctly:

  1. Under your Securitytab, choose Port Access Control within the Options menu.
  2. Make sure that the "enabled" box is unchecked. If you need this enabled, please contact Asante Technical Support for instructions
  3. Another thing to make sure you do not have conflicting information is under the Popular Applications menu.
  4. Make sure that the ports that Timbuktu Pro ports are not listed here as well
