Step 1: Create a database on your database server of choice (SQL 7, SQL 2000, Oracle 7.x, Oracle 8.x, Oracle 9.0, IBM DB2 Universal Database 7.1, MySQL 3.23.x, or Sybase SQL Anywhere 7.0.3). This is the database that netOctopus will use.
Step 2: Create your user/server login, on the server, for the database you created.
On the netOctopus Administrator console machine:
Step 3: Create your data source.
- If you are on Windows 2000 or Windows XP, open the "Data Sources (ODBC)" control panel in Administrative Tools.
- If you are on Windows NT, Windows ME, or Windows 98, open the "ODBC Data Sources" control panel in Control Panels.
- If you are on a Macintosh, go to http://www.openlinksw.com. Download and install the corresponding driver for the server that you are using.
The following information must be specified and steps must be taken when you create your data source in the ODBC setup utility. In addition, be sure to meet all the criteria required by the database you are using.
- You can create your data source in either the User DSN tab or the System DSN tab. User DSN can be used only by
the user who created the data source, whereas System DSN can be used by anyone who has access to the computer.
- On the User DSN tab or the System DSN tab, click the Add button and select the driver
recommended by the manufacturer of the database server you are using. Then click Finish.
- The Create a New Data Source dialog box appears. In the "Which SQL Server do you want to connect to?" field,
enter the IP address or Host name of the database server for the database you created in Step 1. Then click Next.
- Specify the type of login that you created in Step 2. If you selected SQL Server authentication,
enter the Login ID and Password.
- Click the Client Configuration button to configure the client. In the Add Network Library Configuration dialog box,
specify options as needed. Then click OK to return to the Create a New Data Source dialog box, and click Next.
- Select the database you created in Step 1. Then click Next. On the next page, click Finish.
- The ODBC Microsoft SQL Server Setup dialog box appears, confirming the settings you have selected.
Click the Test Data Source button to test whether the data source has successfully made a connection to the database.
On the netOctopus Administrator:
Step 4: Now, open the netOctopus Administrator. Click the Edit menu and choose "Settings" (on Windows) or "Preferences" (on Macintosh).
In the Settings/Preferences dialog box, click the SQL tab and select the type of database you are using from the Backend Database drop-down list. From the Data Source drop-down list, select the data source you created in Step 3. Then, if necessary, enter the name and password for the login account you created in Step 2 (optional). Then check "Use SQL backend databases instead of internal database" and select a backend connection option.
Step 5: On the Databases tab in the netOctopus Preferences/Settings, select the databases that you want to save to your SQL backend database. Then click OK.
Step 6: In the netOctopus Administrator, click the SQL menu and choose "Create SQL Schema…" You can leave the regular Admin name blank if you are not using regular admin for the connection.
If the connection is successful, netOctopus will display the progress bar for creating the new tables on the database.
