Customizing the netOctopus Agent for Windows

See the Getting and Setting netOctopus Agent Registry Entries document.

Version 4.0 through 4.2.1

See the Customizing the Agent guide.

Version 3.6.4 and below

To make large scale rollouts easier and enable you to adapt the installation of the netOctopus Agent to your corporate environment, the behavior of the netOctopus Agent installer can be customized. The Agent can be configured to be prebonded to a specific serial number to prevent someone else from bonding your Agent before you are able to contact it. This prebond and other customizations to the Windows Agent installer is done through a text file named SETTINGS.INI. If this file is present in the same folder as the Agent installer when the installer is launched, it is automatically used to modify the installer's behavior.

Place the SETTINGS.INI file in same folder as the Agent installer. Note this folder must not be write-protected since the installer needs to be able to create an output file. The SETTINGS.INI file is divided into two sections with the headings of [Variables] and [netOctopus Agent].

To prebond the netOctopus Agent to specific serial number, place the NAPREFS.INI file from an Agent machine that has already been bonded to a desired serial number in the same folder as the Agent installer and rename it to NAPREFSINST.INI. Then reference this file in the [Variables] section of the SETTINGS.INI file with:

[Variables]
0=UseNAPref||1

Other customized settings for the Agent that are available via the SETTINGS.INI file include:

Force the User Info dialog box to be opened during Agent installation. Installation will not continue unless dialog box is closed by clicking on OK box.

[Variables]
1=DisplayUserInfoDialog||1

Hide checkbox for locking user information fields.

[netOctopus Agent]
ShowLockUserInfoCheckbox=0

Lock user information fields without requiring any confirmation so they are not changeable locally after Agent installation. They can, however, still be changed from the netOctopus Administrator console.

[netOctopus Agent]
LockUserInfo=1

Rename user information fields (User Info 1 = > Computer Serial Number).

[netOctopus Agent]
UserInfoTitle1=Computer Serial Number

Pre-enter data into user information fields.

[netOctopus Agent]
UserInfo1=PC12345

It is recommended that you prebond your netOctopus Agents and also rename the 10 custom user information fields to whatever is most useful for your particular environment. They can be used to store user information or software and hardware serial numbers that the netOctopus Administrator console would not otherwise be able to retrieve via electronic means. Here is a sample SETTINGS.INI file in its entirety:

[Variables]
0=UseNAPref||1
1=DisplayUserInfoDialog||1
