Removing the netOctopus PC Agent from the Add/Remove Programs list On Windows 9X/ME machines

Administrators may wish to remove the netOctopus PC Agent from the Add/Remove Programs list to prevent users from uninstalling the Agent. This can be done by editing the Windows Registry to remove the entry for the netOctopus Agent. Administrators may either do this manually with Regedit using the steps outlined or they can use the provided executable script that will perform the same function. Use this script at your own risk. This script is provided as a convenience to Netopia's customers. Be aware that there is no support for this script.

This document contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restore the Registry" Help topic in Regedit. Use Regedit at your own risk.

To remove the netOctopus Agent from the Add/Remove Programs list:

  1. Run Regedit.

  2. Browse to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

  3. Each key under Uninstall represents a program that appears in Add/Remove Programs. Highlight the "netOctopus PC Agent" key and select Delete from the Edit menu.

  4. Close Regedit after you are done deleting the netOctopus PC Agent key.

  5. Open the Add/Remove Programs control panel to verify that the entry for the netOctopus PC Agent has indeed been removed.
Please note that this procedure merely removes the netOctopus PC Agent from the Add/Remove Programs list. There is nothing to prevent a user who is computer savvy from manually removing the netOctopus Agent by deleting the directory that it was installed to. To prevent this from occurring we would suggest you implement policies on your network using Microsoft's System Policy Editor to restrict user access to the Add/Remove Programs control panel, the Windows Explorer, and the MS-DOS prompt.
