How to setup Timbuktu Pro to utilize Mac OS X's file and folder ownership

This brief guide is intended to help users of Timbuktu Pro to quickly utilize OS X file and folder ownership

In Timbuktu Pro v6.0.2 and higher, Timbuktu Pro's Send and Exchange features on a Mac OS X host, will now set file and folder ownership according to how the Timbuktu Pro visitor connected.

  • If the visitor connected as a Trusted Visitor, Timbuktu Pro will look at the Mac OS X system user list for a user with the same name as the Timbuktu Pro visitor. If it finds one, it will set the owner and group, of any files or folders created in the Send or Exchange session, to that user and that user's primary group.

In the example above, if the Guest attempts to log into the Host using the Trusted Vistor John, then Timbuktu Pro verifies that John is in fact an OS X system user as well. Therefore all files exchanged, will be owned by John and the files' group with be John's primary group.

  • If there is not a matching system user, or if the Timbuktu visitor connected as a Public Visitor, with Ask for Permission, as a Temporary Visitor, or as an Administrator, Timbuktu will set the owner of the new file or folder to the first Admin user and the group to the admin group.

In the example above, if the Guest attempts to log into the Host using the Trusted Vistor Betty, then Timbuktu Pro tries to verify that Betty is in fact an OS X system user. Since Betty is not an OS X user, Timbuktu Pro will set the ownership to the first Admin users listed. In this case, they will default to Steph's iMac.
