Why can't I make a Dial Direct connection using my ISDN modem?
- Try the Farallon Netopia ISDN modem description in the Timbuktu Pro Mac Dial Direct Preferences. That selection works for most ISDN modems.
- Make certain that both ISDN modems support the V.120 protocol and are set to use it. ISDN modems must support the V.120 protocol and be set to use in order to make a Dial Direct connection in Timbuktu Pro for Mac or Windows.
- Make sure that the modem is running the correct firmware as necessary for the country in which it's being used.
- Make certain that the modem you're connecting to is also running the correct firmware for the country it's located in.
- If all of the above is correct, but the Farallon Netopia ISDN modem description isn't working, you could also try downloading an INF from your modem manufacturer and place it in your Modem Descriptions folder located within the Extensions folder. You will then see the additional modem descriptions specific to your modem in your Modem Picker in the Dial Direct Preferences.
- If that still doesn't do it, we recommend that you try a Zterm test between the two modems. Zterm takes Timbuktu out of the equation to make sure that the modems are both functioning and able to communicate with each other outside of Timbuktu. Zterm is available from shareware.com or download.com. It's also available on the Timbuktu CD in the CD extras folder.
Launch Zterm on both systems. Go to the Zterm 'Settings' menu and down to 'Connection'. Make sure that the Data Rate is set to 115200 on both systems, which is what is used by used Timbuktu. Also make sure that Flow Control is set to 'Hardware Handshake' on both systems. Having these settings within ZTerm on both systems ensures that the test is equivalent to a Timbuktu connection with regards to the settings used.
On the system that will receive the call:
type AT&F1S0=1
(this will enable this system to answer a call)
On the system you're dialing from, type the following in Zterm:
type AT (return)
After OK
type ATDT (space) (number to be dialed, including any prefix or area code)
hit Return
If you can't connect with Zterm, you won't be able to connect using Timbuktu either. If you can make the Zterm connection, but not the Timbuktu connection, please get back to us with specific information about the operating system, version of Timbuktu and exact model of modem on both systems. Also please include any error message you're receiving and the country or countries the modems are in.
