This brief guide is intended to help first time users of Timbuktu Pro quickly set up and establish a Dial Direct connection between two Macs. This is by no means a definitive guide. There are alternate ways of establishing a Timbuktu Pro Dial Direct connection. This guide presents only one of them. Within the context of this guide the host is always the Mac that is accepting the incoming Dial Direct call and the guest is always the Mac that is making the outgoing Dial Direct call.
- From the Setup menu, select Preferences
- In the list of Preferences categories, select Dial Direct
- Under the Modem Connection section, choose the port that your modem is attached to.
- In the Modem Handling section, set up your modem so that Timbuktu Pro is able to communicate with it.
- Use the Standard setting first and see if your modem responds.
- If the Standard setting does not work, then use the Special setting. Click on the Modem button to bring up the Modem Picker. Select the manufacturor and model that corresponds to your modem. If you have a 56k modem that is not listed, then try the Generic 56k model listed under the manufacturor Generic Modem.
- If your modem is not listed you can add it to the list of selections in the Modem Picker. Timbuktu Pro uses Windows INF files. Obtain the correct INF file for your specific modem from the manufacturer and place it in the following location on your hard drive: System:Extensions:Modem Descriptions. The make and model of your modem should now appear in the Modem Picker.
- If the Windows INF file for you particular modem does not work, then you can try entering a custom initialization string for it. Contact the manufacturer of your modem to get this. Select the Custom setting. In the Modem Picker select the manufacturer Generic Modem and for the model choose Add Custom Initialization String. Note that the Customer Init field in the Modem Handling section is no longer grayed out. Enter your customer initialization string here.
- If your Mac is the host machine that will be accepting the incoming Dial Direct call, check the Turn Modem Speaker On box in the section labeled When Answering Calls. This will allow you to better troubleshoot any connection problems that may occur. If your Mac is the guest that will be initiating the outgoing call, skip this step.
- Click the Save button to save your Dial Direct preferences
- If your Mac is the host machine, from the Setup menu, select Incoming Access and check the Dial Direct box. If your Mac is the guest, skip this step.
- On the host Mac, select Visitor Privileges from the Setup menu.
- In the Visitor Privileges window, click on the button labeled New to bring up the New Visitor window.
- In the New Visitor window, enter a username and a password for the user that will be dialing in. In the Confirm field, re-enter the user's password. Be careful because both the username and password are case-sensitive. Remember this username and password because you will need it later to log on to this host machine.
- In the Let New Visitor section, check off all services that you want to grant to the dial in user.
- Make sure that the Let visitor dial into your computer box is checked off. Otherwise, you will not be able to log in via Dial Direct from the guest system.
- Click on the Save button to save this account information for the dial in user.
- In the File menu, choose New Connection.
- Select the tab with the icon of the telephone on it.
- In the Phone Number field, enter the phone number exactly as you would dial it if it were a voice call.
- Make sure that the Modem speaker on box is checked. This is for troubleshooting purposes.
- Click on the Dial button to connect to the host machine.
- A login prompt will appear once Timbuktu Pro has connected to the host.
- Select Trusted Visitor in the login box.
- Enter the username and password that you previously set up on the host machine. Both the username and password must be entered exactly as you entered them on the host when you set up the new visitor account. Once you have been authenticated, a dialog box will appear reporting your connection speed.
- From the Services menu, select a service (such as Send, Exchange, Control, or Look) with which you wish to open a session with the host Mac. A login prompt will appear again.
- Enter the username and password that you previously set up on the host machine. Both the username and password
must be entered exactly as you entered them on the host when you set up the new visitor account. Once you have been authenticated,
a window will open up for the service that you selected
