Why does my Dial Direct tab disappear in a Terminal Server connection

Timbuktu Pro Dial Direct tab will not display in a Terminal Server session. This is because of the possible conflict that may occur if multiple users are logged onto the same server, and more that 1 user is trying to utilize the modem, to initiate a Dial direct session.

Why can't I access my Timbuktu Pro Preferences/Security setting in a Terminal Server session?

When Timbuktu Pro is running in a Terminal Server session, it is running in guest only mode (you can only make outgoing connections). So, the Security/Preferences do not apply. The Security settings only apply for the host sessions. The Preferences should be set by the administrator and will be applied to all Timbuktu Pro Terminal server sessions.

Installation

Why, after installing Timbuktu Pro for Windows, does the machine attempt to dial out to the ISP (Internet Service Provider) after bootup?

This is because Timbuktu Pro is started as a service and it is looking for the first available IP address.

If you want to change this behavior, open Timbuktu Pro and deselect Start as a Service in the Setup/Preference/General window.

Now when you wish to make a Timbuktu Pro connection, you will have to:

  1. Connect to the Internet
  2. Manually launch it from the Start/Programs/TimbuktuPro menu
  3. Select TimbuktuPro and then make the connection.

Can Timbuktu Pro for Windows and PC Anywhere be installed on the same machine?

Netopia does not support having both Timbuktu Pro and PC Anywhere installed on the same machine, nor do we recommend attempting to have both applications installed. Netopia strongly recommends that PC Anywhere be completely uninstalled from any machine prior to installing Timbuktu Pro. Timbuktu Pro will abort the installation if it finds PC Anywhere installed.

  • Windows 95/98/2000/XP should be able to handle having both Timbuktu Pro and PC Anywhere installed, as long as the applications aren't both launching at start-up, or both running at some point after start-up.
  • Windows NT 4.0 does not support having both applications installed. There are possible video conflicts that may arise if both are installed on Windows NT 4.0 or when running both applications simultaneously on Windows 95/98/2000/XP. Those video conflicts may result in a severe system crash requiring you to reinstall the operating system.

When installing Timbuktu Pro, gets this Error Message: Error #9, Remote control components cannot be installed. Task aborted

Please visit the following technote for step by step instructions for resolving this installation issue: TP2000_014.html

    Steps to take:

    1. Go to the install directory for Timbuktu Pro (The default is c:\tb2proXXX), and rename our Shlwapi.dll to Shlwapi.lld
    2. Go to your Windows\System directory, and copy the Shlwapi.dll, into the Timbuktu Pro Install directory
    3. Install Timbuktu Pro and reboot

When installing Timbuktu Pro on a Windows operating systems, one may get the error message "Wininet.dll file is linked to missing ADVAPI32.dll:CryptoGetProParam"?

Problem: After installing Timbuktu Pro on a Windows PC, especially Windows 95, on reboot of the machine, Timbuktu Pro does not launch and the following error messages appear:

"Wininet.dll file is linked to missing ADVAPI32.dll: CryptoGetProParam"

"WININET.DLL not loading or being found"

Our features, LDAP and Internet Locator use these files and Internet Explorer version 5.x automatically installs them. The easiest way to resolve this matter is, to install Internet Explorer first, then install Timbuktu Pro

    Launching

Where should I launch Timbuktu Pro on Windows operating systems?

On some Windows machine, you will see a Timbuktu Pro icon next to the Start menu. The place to launch Timbuktu Pro is double click on the Timbuktu Pro icon (next to the system clock) in the system tray, which is located in the lower right hand corner

Why doesn't Timbuktu launch when I select Timbuktu Pro from the Programs window?

The default behavior of Timbuktu Pro for Windows is to launch as a service on boot-up. You will know if Timbuktu has been launched by the presence of the computer icon in the System Tray. The System Tray is the rectangular area on the Task Bar by the clock.

To get the Timbuktu Window once the application has been launched, right click on the Timbuktu icon and select Open (from the pop-up menu), or double click on the Timbuktu icon.

Why does the installation of Timbuktu take so long, or appear to stall?

Anti-virus products and other programs or utilities that run in the background may interfere with software installation, causing the delay in completing the installation, or file corruption. Despite the appearance of a successful installation, conflicts may have occurred. These conflicts can cause error messages and other issues when the program is running. Installing Timbuktu with antivirus and other programs disabled will minimize conflicts.

    Connections

Can Timbuktu Pro work through a router running Network Address Translation?

Yes! Timbuktu Pro can function through a NAT router however it will only be able to connect to ONE machine behind the router.

For more information on configuring Timbuktu Pro for the connection, please visit our Connecting through a router running Network Address Translation how to guide.

Does Timbuktu Pro work over a Satellite/Wireless connection?

Generally Timbuktu Pro works well over a Satellite or wireless connections, however may become unstable if there any of the following symptoms are present:

    1. Significant Packet loss occurs before or during a Timbuktu Pro session.
    2. Ping response times exceed the 300ms range, or destination host becomes unreachable.
    3. Other wireless signals (Cordless Phones) possibly interfering with the connection.
Also, satellite connection have been known to use a specific TCP/IP address to establish a outbound connection, but use a different address when receiving inbound connections. Meaning some satellite users dial-up to the Internet, then receives a IP address from their ISP to initiate a outbound connection. However, when the same user is trying to receive a inbound connection, the users ISP will use a IP address associated with their (ISP) broadband connection. This is also seen in multi-homed operating systems as well. In this scenario one adapter binds to the public IP address where as to the second adapter binds to the Private IP address. Timbuktu Pro will display the IP address of whichever adapter has priority in the Local Area Connection Properties window. This may prevent outside connections from coming inbound.

Does Timbuktu Pro for Windows support modem - to - modem connections between two Windows machines, or between a Macintosh and a Windows PC?

As of Timbuktu Pro 2000, we support connections between any two Macintosh or Windows machines; you can connect from Mac to Mac, Mac to PC, PC to PC, or PC to Mac. Timbuktu Pro for Windows has built in serial protocol for direct modem-to-modem connections like the Direct Dial protocol that ships with Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh. The Windows version can run over TCP/IP (the Internet protocol).

How do I get both my FAX and Dial Direct to answer incoming calls?

There is no way to set Timbuktu's Dial Direct service to answer calls and also have your Fax software set to answer calls.

However, if you set your Fax software NOT to answer incoming Faxes, you should be able to have Dial Direct set to answer calls and also be able to send outbound faxes. Timbuktu should release the port to the Fax software for outbound Faxes. Similarly, if you turn off Timbuktu's Dial Direct feature so that it is NOT set to answer incoming calls, and you set your Fax software to answer incoming Faxes, then you should be able to dial out with Timbuktu's Dial Direct service. The Fax software should release port to Dial Direct for the outbound call.

If you must have your Fax software set to answer calls, and also need to access his same machine via Timbuktu for unattended access, you might consider using Timbuktu over TCP/IP.

Can I access Timbuktu nodes that are located behind a firewall?

Yes. However, in order for Timbuktu Pro to work through a firewall, UDP port 407 and TCP ports 1417 through 1420 must be open. Timbuktu Pro uses UDP port 407 for connection handshaking and then switches to the TCP ports for Timbuktu Services: Control (1417), Observe (1418), Send (1419), and Exchange (1420).

As with most IP communication, the response packets are in the dynamic range above 1023. If you cannot successfully connect with another Timbuktu host, the network manager may need to reconfigure the firewall permissions to permit the above TCP and UDP port assignments.

However, if both the guest and the host are running Timbuktu Pro for Mac version 5.2.x, only TCP Port 407 needs to be opened on the firewall for all services except the intercom feature, which uses the dynamic ports

Please refer to the appropriate firewall technote for a listing of the ports used by your Timbuktu Pro product:

For Timbuktu Pro 32 or Timbuktu Pro for Windows version- TP32_007 Firewalls and Timbuktu Pro.

For Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh - TPM_031 Firewall Issues.

Can I connect through a proxy server using Timbuktu Pro for Windows?

Timbuktu Pro is not a proxy aware application. As such, no Timbuktu connections can be made through a proxy server.

If you have a firewall, not a proxy server, please refer to the appropriate Firewall Technote for a listing of the ports used by your Timbuktu Pro product:

For Timbuktu Pro for Windows: TP32_007: Firewalls and Timbuktu Pro

For Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh: TPM_031: Firewall Issues.

Error Message: Unable to initiate modem connection

This error message usually means that the modem is in used by another application.

Exit and shut down the other application that is using the modem. Then, use Timbuktu Pro for Windows.

Why can't I dial out to my Internet Service Provider (ISP) or use the fax software while running Timbuktu Pro

This problem occurs because the modem, is set to wait for a call to come in.

    To resolve:

    1. Go to Timbuktu Pro\Setup\Preferences
    2. Click on the Dial Direct tab
    3. Make sure that "On incoming calls", the "Do Not Answer" is enabled

This must be done before you dial out to the ISP or before using fax software

    Log On/Off

How do I type lower-case characters on a Host Machine that has Caps Locks on?

If you are using Timbuktu Pro to remotely logon to a machine that has Caps Lock enabled and your password has lower-case characters, you will need to hold down the shift key. This will allow you to type lower-case characters.

Why can't I type characters in the Windows NT logon box after sending the Ctrl+Alt+Del to Remote Computer command?

In some cases users may not be able to enter keyboard information when trying to log into a remote Windows NT host. This is caused by a user hitting the Ctrl-Alt-Del keyboard combination on the guest keyboard. This sends a key down sequence to the host. In order to recover keyboard function, press the Ctrl key on the guest's keyboard and release. Then separately, press the Alt key and release. You should now be able to enter your login information on the host.

The proper method for sending a Ctrl-Alt-Del to the host is to select 'Send Ctrl-Alt-Del to Remote Computer' in the drop-down menu under the hand icon in the upper left corner of your control window.

When connecting to the remote machine, why is the guest presented with two login prompts?

The first prompt is the Enter Network Password dialogue box. This is because Timbuktu Pro is using NT authentication by default. If you are not using NT authentication, just click the cancel button and use the second prompt, which is either Ask For Permission or Log On As A Registered User.

How do I send the Control+Alt+Delete commmand to a Windows NT machine?

To send Ctrl+Alt+Del to a remote Windows NT or Windows 95 machine from another Windows machine, go to the menu in the upper left corner of the screen-sharing window. Select "Send Ctrl+Alt+Del to Remote Computer". When remotely logging in from a Macintosh, the key sequence Ctrl+Option+Del should be used.

    Control/Observe

Will I have troubles with Timbuktu Pro if multiple users are logged in with "Fast User Switching" enabled?

When multiple users are logged in with "Fast User Switching" enabled, if XP displays the Welcome screen, Timbuktu will not run and screen sharing is not possible.

After upgrading to Windows 2000 from Windows NT, the guest machine controls another machine, gets an error message "This machine does not allows controllers"

After installing Windows 2000 over Windows NT 4.0, you will have to uninstall Timbuktu Pro, reboot the machine, and then install Timbuktu Pro.

Why do I get a blank screen or my session disconnect when a screen saver is active or the "On resume, display Welcome screen" option is on?

If the screen saver becomes active and the "On resume, display Welcome screen" option is checked, screen sharing will not work correctly. You may get a black screen or the session will disconnect.

Does Timbuktu Pro for Windows map the Windows key in a control session?

Currently Timbuktu Pro does not map the Windows key in a remote control session. Alternatively, you can use Ctrl+Esc to pop-up the Start menu. If a Guest (the computer you are connecting from) presses the Windows key on their local keyboard, it will pull up the Start menu locally, but result in the Host machine (the machine being controlled) getting a Ctrl down command. For example, typing "f" when you are in an application will pull up the Find window.

The work around is to press the Windows key on the Host's keyboard and then click back in the application. If the Host's keyboard doesn't have a Windows key, then you can press Ctrl+Esc. Pressing Ctrl+Esc on the Host's keyboard does not work if there is a Windows key.

Why does the mouse pointer disappear or make choppy movements in the Control Window?

The mouse pointer may disappear or make choppy movements when in the Control window:

    • if there isn't a mouse physically plugged into the Host machine (i.e. the machine being controlled),
    • if the mouse drivers aren't properly installed,
    • if the mouse pointer is a 3D pointer or a non-standard Windows pointer, or
    • it could be a result of the Display Settings on the Host machine.
    Things to do:
    • Plug a mouse into the Host machine
    • Reinstall the mouse drivers
    • In the Mouse Control Panel for the Pointers, set the Scheme to (None) and the pointer to Normal Select
    • Update the video driver
    • Adjust the Display Settings, meaning the Color Palette, Desktop Area, Refresh Rate, and/or Acceleration

**Timbuktu now supports controlling a machine that does not have a mouse physically plugged into it. If the Host machine does not have a mouse, the control screen will display a cross-hair (+) cursor. This feature has been implemented in Timbuktu Pro 2000 build 827. This is however a feature specific to Windows to Windows connections only. If you are connecting where a Macintosh is involved, please visit the following URL for the workaround: TP2000_015.html

How do I switch between monitors when controlling a Macintosh equipped with dual monitors?

When controlling a Macintosh equipped with dual monitors, press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+(left or right arrow) to switch between the monitors. This will only work in Control mode, not Observe mode.

What are the cross-platform key mappings?

For a chart on cross-platform keys, please visit the following link: KeyMaps.html

Can Timbuktu Pro 2000 and higher talk to Timbuktu Pro 1.5.4 host (machine being remotely controlled)?

No, you will get double characters when logging into Timbuktu 1.5.4. We currently do not support Control sessions between computers running TimbuktuPro 2000 and higher and Timbuktu 1.5.4 for Windows. Significant code changes and compatibility issues exist between the 16-bit (Timbuktu 1.5.4) and 32-bit (Timbuktu Pro 2000) products, Netopia recommends upgrading to the latest version of Timbuktu Pro for Windows available.

Why do I see white marks in a control session wherever the mouse cursor is moved while using Timbuktu Pro 4.5?

We have primarily seen this occur when a user is running Timbuktu Pro 4.5 and the host machine that they are connected to has it colors set at 256. We have resolved this issue in v5.0 and higher

  • How can I get Timbuktu Pro to recognize all of the screens on a machine running multiple Matrox video cards?

The best way to currently resolve this issue is by disabling the DirectX and Direct Draw in the Matrox settings window. Our engineering team is working on a more permanent fix that should be available shortly.

    Send/Exchange

Why can't I see the folders of a mapped drive in a Timbuktu File Exchange window?

When Timbuktu launches as a service, the folders of a mapped drive will not show up in the Timbuktu File Exchange window. This happens because Timbuktu launches and gathers the hard drive information before the drive is mapped.

The current workarounds are to either shut down and relaunch Timbuktu after the drive is mapped, or to not have Timbuktu launch as a service. Netopia will be working on a permanent fix in a later release.

Can I use long file names with Timbuktu Pro for Windows?

Timbuktu Pro for Windows supports long file names on all platforms including cross-platform (Windows-to-Mac) transfers.

Timbuktu Pro for Windows, versions 1.1 and 1.5.4, do not support long file names on Windows platforms. If file names longer than the traditional DOS and Windows 8.3 character format are transferred with these versions of Timbuktu Pro, the names will be shortened when they arrive on the destination machine.

    Security

Does Timbuktu Pro for Windows support encryption?

Although Timbuktu Pro has always encrypted the passwords (Timbuktu or NT) used to actually authenticate the remote control session, prior versions did not encrypt the remote control data stream, because Netopia's proprietary graphic protocol was complicated enough to prohibit the easy decoding of display data. However, since data typed during the remote control session was only hidden to the extent that the keystrokes were randomly commingled with other upstream data, these keystrokes were, technically, clear text, and a potential security hole.

Netopia has now added a security enhancement, available as of Timbuktu Pro 2000 and Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh v.5.2.3 and higher, which dynamically scrambles and encodes all keyboard and mouse data that is sent from the guest to the host machine on a per session basis.

Based on customer feedback regarding the performance, complexity and cost issues of implementing a full standards based PKI security solution, we believe that our current solution offers the best balance between security and performance. As with all aspects of the Timbuktu product suite, we remain committed to continuing improvement, and are working with various security vendors to develop ways to simplify the deployment and maintenance of an even more comprehensive security solution.

Why, after upgrading to Timbuktu Pro for Windows, does the NT Users "AskHostPermission" setting not work?

Because the NT AskHostPermission setting is now defined per user (versus being a global setting, as in previous versions). One should install Timbuktu Pro for Windows on a system, and then configure the NT Users

Make sure you know the username and password for this machine before you disable Use Welcome Screen. Once Use Welcome Screen is disabled you will get the original Windows username and password prompt instead of the icons to click on to log into XP.

Does Timbuktu Pro support remote printing?

Currently Netopia does not support using Timbuktu Pro for remote printing (or any other version of Timbuktu Pro for Windows). Although this is a Feature Request we are tracking, there have been no announcements made regarding its implementation.

Why does Timbuktu Pro shut down when sending Microsoft Power Point slides to Microsoft Word?
