Netopia provides a range of ADSL residential gateway products for use on the eircom broadband network, including Wireless Residential Gateways.
|
Please Note: The purpose of this Quick Guide is to outline configuration of the wireless LAN networking properties of the Netopia 3300 Series Residential Wireless Gateway incorporating MAC Authentication for your network security. This will limit access to network resources via the wireless interface to specified hardware devices.
This document assumes a properly working DSL internet connection.

Browse into the Netopia's web interface at http://192.168.1.254 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly.
Your Netopia Eircom Gateway home screen will appear. If your router is running the latest Eircom approved firmware, you will see an opening screen similar to the image below on the right. Instructions pertaining to this technote will follow immediately after this introduction.
Routers running firmware prior to version 7.4.2 R2 will have a home screen similar to the image on the left. This technote contains features not available in firmware prior to 7.4.2 R2. Click on the new image to the right to download the most current version of Netopia / eircom firmware.

Netopia / eircom Gateway Default Settings:
- Wireless Radio = enabled
- Wireless ID (SSID) = eircomXXXX XXXX
(where XXXX XXXX is a unique number for your Wireless Gateway)
- Privacy (Wireless Security) = WEP On Manual
- Default Wireless Channel = 7
Wireless Security:
- Beginning with firmware release 7.4.2R2, the Privacy configuration option is set to WEP-On Manual by default on eircom supplied Netopia 3300 Series Residential Wireless Gateways. This setting uses a preconfigured encryption key for your convenience.
- The default WEP key can be automatically installed on your PC's Wireless network adapter by running the eircom Installation Guide on the CD, which came with your Wireless Gateway. A wired Ethernet connection to the gateway also lets you access the configuration screens, and from there you can copy and paste the WEP encryption key which must match precisely. It is strongly recommended that you do not disable Privacy.
Encryption:
In addition to pre-defined WEP security. The 3300 Series Residential Wireless Gateway also has other wireless Privacy options. These are:
- OFF - No Privacy: This mode disables privacy on your network, allowing any wireless users to connect to your wireless LAN. Use this option if you are using alternative security measures such as VPN tunnels, or if your network is for public use.
- WEP - Automatic: The simplest way to enable WEP is to select On - Automatic, enter a passphrase, and click the link to make keys. You can also change the key size. This will generate four WEP keys, which you would then set on each of your wireless clients. Be sure to copy the keys exactly, and place them in the same slots!
- WPA-802.1x provides RADIUS server authentication support. RADIUS servers allow external authentication of users by means of a remote authentication database. If you select WPA-802.1x, you will be allowed to enter your RADIUS server information.
- WPA-PSK provides Wireless Protected Access, the most secure option for your wireless network. This mechanism provides the best data protection and access control. Be sure that your Wi-Fi client adapter supports this option. Not all Wi-Fi clients support WPA-PSK.
- Wireless MAC Authorization (optional) -- MAC Authorization allows you to specify which client PCs are allowed to join the wireless LAN by unique hardware (MAC) address.
- Enable Closed System Mode -- If enabled, Closed System Mode hides the wireless network from the scanning features of
wireless client computers.
If you wish to use options other than the defaults, you can access them under the Advanced Configuration Options section.

Click Here! if you'd like to use MAC Authentication for additional network security. MAC Authentication can be used in conjunction with WEP and WPA Encryption.

- Click on
.
- The default wireless settings are displayed. The Encryption Key can be manually copied to your PC's Wireless Network properties or it can be automatically set using the Installation guide on your eircom CD.
- You can change the Wireless ID (SSID) or disable the wireless interface from this page. If you make any changes Click on Save Changes to store them to the gateway. You must restart your router to have these changes take affect.
- Other Wireless settings can be accessed by clicking on the Advanced Configuration Options.
- The Default Channel setting is preset at 7. This refers to radio frequency ranges within the 2.4 Ghz range and can be changed as long as the wireless network settings match.
- Enable Closed System Mode: is Unchecked by default. Check to enable Closed Mode.
- When unchecked, or in Open Mode, this SSID will be broadcast as an available wireless network to any compatible WiFi Device within broadcast reach.
- When checked (enabled), or in Closed Mode, it will be necessary to enter the SSID value into the client card configuration to permit access to the available network.
- In Closed Mode the Netopia wireless network is hidden from the scanning features of other wireless-enabled computers. The only clients allowed to access your network are those configured with the same SSID value.
- Closed System mode is recommended for increased security from unauthorized access or unwanted detection of a wireless "hotspot".
- Privacy (or Encryption) is WEP - Manual by default.
- Select WEP - Automatic from the drop down menu if you wish to change this Privacy setting.
- Enter a Passphrase to automatically generate the encryption key.
- Once you have generated the key, that value should be transposed into the corresponding field of your wireless network card for the computer(s).
- The encryption key must match and be entered into the same slot (slot #1 in this example) of the wireless client. It is recommended that you cut and paste longer encryption strings to ensure accuracy.
- If you selected WPA-PSK , you will need to enter the Pre Share encryption key in here that matches that in your wireless network card. Be sure that your Wi-Fi client adapter supports this option. Not all Wi-Fi clients support.
- If you select WPA-802.1x, you will need to have a external RADIUS server available. Enter the details of the RADIUS server.
-
Click on MAC Authorization.
- Enable Wireless MAC Authorization should be Unchecked (by default).
- MAC Authorization can be left disabled, or you can further limit access to the network by configuring this option.
- Click Here! if you'd like to use MAC Authentication for additional network security. MAC Authentication can be used in conjunction with WEP Encryption.
- Click on Done.
- Once you have input all necessary information, click on
and confirm to restart the Netopia.
