IP Maps (Address Forwarding) IEQG_024 (a)

IP Maps allow multiple static WAN IP addresses, up to a maximum of 10 addresses, to be assigned to the Netopia gateway. Static WAN IP addresses are used to support specific services, like a web server, mail server, or DNS server. This is accomplished by mapping a separate static WAN IP address to a specific internal LAN IP address. All traffic arriving at the gateway intended for the static IP address is transferred to the internal device. All outbound traffic from the internal device appears to originate from the static IP address. This supports locally hosted servers on a public IP address while protecting LAN users behind the NAT IP address.

PLEASE NOTE: From the LAN (Local Area Network), you will also be able to access the servers that are responding to requests from the internet, but only using the internal private IP address. Access via the public IP address is not supported from a local ethernet connection.
This technote will guide you through the setup process for this feature in your Netopia.

Before you start
Please Note: The IP Addressing in this document is for illustrative purposes only. The public IP's provided by your ISP will be different and unique to your internet account. With Network Address Translation enabled, any private network addressing scheme can be used that is consistent with your LAN settings.

Browse into the Netopia's web interface at http://192.168.1.254 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly. The default Username is admin, and the default Password is the router serial number. Remember to click the button to save any entries. Hitting the back button without clicking will undo any changes.

Once you have completed your configuration, click on the symbol in your upper right hand corner to validate the changes. Then click on Save and Restart.

Configuration -- v7.2 through 7.4.2
  1. In the L/H column, click on Expert Mode (if that link is visible) and confirm action.
  2. Click on Configure Menu bar.
  3. Click on Advanced.
  4. Under the NAT heading, click on IP Maps.

  5. Click on the Add button.
  6. In the IP Map Entry box:

    1. Enter a unique IP Map Name.
      PLEASE NOTE: The name entered should not exceed 15 characters for each entry!
    2. Enter the private Internal IP Address
      of the device on your network.
    3. Enter the public External IP Address provided to you by the ISP that is being mapped to the internal private address.
    4. Click on Submit to save.

  7. In the file path menu bar directly above
    the IP Map Entry box, click on the IP Maps link.

  8. On this screen you will now see the IP Maps you have configured.
  9. You can Add new maps from this screen, or Edit and Delete existing maps by highlighting and selecting the desired function.
  10. Click on the in the upper right hand corner. This will validate that the settings are legal for your network.
  11. If you get Validation Passed, click Save and Restart in the menu. If it doesn't validate the change, a message will indicate the reason. It must be corrected before the configuration change can be applied.
  12. This completes the configuration of the Netopia for IP Maps.
  13. The router will reboot and is now set to share the Public IP Address with the computer which has been specified to receive that address.

Conclusion
You've now configured your Netopia Router for static IP Mapping.
Be sure to restart the router for these changes to take effect.
