This Technote is a reference to allow remote access and administration of Netopia 3300 Series Internet Gateways.
The Netopia has a built-in web server to allow you to browse into the configuration screens of the router. Telnet access is also allowed into a Command Line Interface, or CLI. In factory default settings, these types of access are only allowed from the LAN interface for security reasons. However, there may be occasions when remote access is necessary for troubleshooting or configuration purposes. Making this change is a very simple matter which is outlined in this document.

Configuring Remote Administration
Please Note:
If you call into Eircom or Netopia Tech Support for configuration assistance and the router is currently connected to the internet, it will facilitate resolving your issue if this process has already been done.
If remote access into the router only needs to be enabled for a short while, you can open this up by going to http://192.168.1.254/SmartDevice/EnableRemoteMgmt (if you are still using the initial default IP Address). Set and confirm a temporary password. There is a drop-down field to set a time limit before remote access is shut off.
If you need to allow long term remote access, first put the Netopia into Expert Mode and set up an admin password. Click on Security, then Passwords in the next screen. Enter the password and confirm. After clicking Submit the password will take effect immediately. After creating the password, you must use it each time you log into the router.
Next, to allow the remote access, go to http://192.168.1.254/IPCirc?3 and set the restrictions to None.
Click on the drop-down button for Restrictions.
Select None from the drop-down menu.
Click on the Submit button to save this change.

In the Save Database box, click on Save and Restart.
Below is an alternative method to set the Restrictions to None.
In the upper menu bar, click on Configure.
Click on WAN.
Click on the vcc1 link under WAN IP Interfaces.
In the WAN IP Interface box:

Click on the drop-down button for Restrictions.
Select None from the drop-down menu.
Click on the Submit button to save this change.
Click on the in the upper right hand corner to validate this change.
In the Save Database box, click on Save and Restart.
Conclusion
You will now be able to remotely access the router configuration menus over the internet, whether by browsing or telnet to the public, or Local Address under the WAN Status on the home screen. Again, for extra security it is advisable to reset the Restrictions to Admin Disabled once remote access is no longer needed.
