Netopia Model 3366 ENT Dial Backup

NQG_336

If your primary ADSL service goes down, the Netopia 3366 has the ability to provide dial backup redundancy configuration. This can be accomplished with its internal V.92 modem, using an Analog dial-up account. Additionally, you can also have backup failover to another LAN router situated on the same LAN subnet.

This technote will guide you through the setup process for this feature in your Model 3366 ENT Netopia router.

Firmware Reference:

  • v8.3.3

Before you start

Telnet into the Netopia router's menu interface at 192.168.1.1 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly.

Login with the user name and password. If you are unsure of this, contact your network administrator.

Remember to hit the enter (or return) key to save any entries. Hitting the escape key will undo any changes, and will also escape back to a previous menu screen.

The tab key acts as a toggle key (yes/no or on/off, etc.)

The Netopia Telnet Menu Interface

V.92 Dial Backup Configuration:

Step A: Configure the Modem

  1. From the Main Menu, arrow down and enter WAN Configuration...
  2. Enter on the WAN Setup... field.
  3. On the WAN Configuration screen, arrow down and enter WAN Setup...
  4. Select WAN (Wide Area Network) Setup...
  5. Select MODEM (Wan Module 2) Setup.
  6. The Modem Dialing Prefix default setting of ATDT is the standard Hayes-compatible code, do not change this setting
  7. For Line Directory Number, enter the dial-up connection phone number for the Analog account.
  8. You can leave the rest of the screen set to the default values. For a detailed description of the additional settings please see Firmware User Guide v8.3.3
  9. Hit the Esc key three times to return to the Main Menu.

Step B: Configuring your Backup Connection Profile

  1. From the Main Menu go to Quick Menus... and select Add Connection Profile.
  2. Enter the Profile Name of your choice.
  3. Encapsulation Type should be PPP.
    1. Leave the Underlying Encapsulation set to None.
    2. Leave PPP Mode set to VC Multiplexed.
  4. Enter on the Encapsulation Options field.
    1. Data Compression should be left to Standard LZS
    2. Set Send Authentication to PAP or CHAP, which ever the Analog provider has instructed.
    3. Type the user name and password information provided by the Analog provider at the Send User Name and Send Password prompts. (You do not need to add a Receive User Name or Password.)
    4. Leave Dial on Demand set to Yes.

NOTE: The Backup profile is set up for Dial on Demand. When the ADSL line fails and the router goes into Backup mode, and you want to insure that the Backup profile comes on line immediately upon loss of ADSL, it is suggested that you configure a Scheduled Connection and associate it to the Backup profile. Please see the Scheduled Connection technote.

  5. Escape back to the Add Connection Profile.
  6. Enter on IP Profile Parameters.
  7. Set Address Translation Enabled to Yes.
  8. Leave IP Addressing set to Unnumbered.
  9. Leave the Local WAN IP Address set to 0.0.0.0
  10. Change Remote IP Address to 127.0.0.2 and the Remote IP Mask to 255.255.255.255
    1. If the Primary WAN connection is set to PPP or to RFC1483 with an Underlying Encapsulation of PPPoE, and 127.0.0.2 has been entered for the Remote IP Address, DO NOT use that value again in the Backup Profile. You can use either 127.0.0.3 or 1.1.1.1
    2. If the remote IP address (of the primary WAN interface) is defined as a legitimate Public IP address with a specified subnet mask other than 255.255.255.255, you may then use 127.0.0.2 as the backup remote IP address and 255.255.255.255 as the netmask.
  11. Escape back once, enter on Interface Group and choose Backup.
  12. Enter on Commit.
  13. Escape back to the Quick Menu screen.

Step C: Configuring the Backup Parameters

  1. From Quick Menu enter on Backup Config.
  2. Set Backup is to Automatic.
  3. Set Requires failure of (minutes) to 1.
  4. At Ping Host Name or IP Address type:
    1. If Primary WAN Connection is set to RFC1483 with an Underlying Encapsulation of None, enter the WAN Default Gateway address for the Ping Host Name or IP Address type.
    2. If the Primary WAN Connection is set to either PPP or RFC1483 with an Underlying Encapsulation of PPPoE, you can set the Ping Host field to either one of the DNS addresses or a known, reliable, public IP address.
    3. Please Note: Do not use 0.0.0.0 in the Ping Host Name or IP Address field, this tells the router to ping an address that is nonexistent.
  5. Set Recovery to ADSL to Automatic.
  6. Set Requires Recovery of (minutes) to 1. Once the primary ADSL connection is available, the router will start a 1 minute countdown before it switches back to primary mode. (This is the recovery to primary WAN connection countdown.)
  7. The Clear Backup Call only if Idle: timer can be set to either Yes or No. Setting the Clear Backup Call only if Idle field to Yes will keep the router from bringing down your backup connection while traffic is still being routed via the backup connection.
  8. If Idle timer is set to No, the backup connection will be torn down after x seconds with no regard to the state of current traffic.
  9. NOTE: You can monitor the recovery process by starting at the Main Menu and going into Statistics and Logs... Enter on Backup Management/Statistics; there you can watch both the router countdown into Backup mode and back into Primary mode.

  10. Press the escape key to return to the Main Menu.
  11. Scroll up and enter Utilities & Diagnostics... and Restart System...
  12. CONTINUE to confirm this action.
  13. After the Netopia restarts, you will have the ability to use the Dial Backup feature of your router.

Backup to a LAN Router Configuration:

Backup to another LAN router lets you use the Backup IP Gateway to redirect your internet traffic to another router on the local area network.

Step A: Configuring your Backup Gateway
  1. From the Main Menu, scroll down and enter the Quick Menus...
  2. Scroll over to IP Setup and enter.
  3. Enter the IP address of the alternate router. (You must hit the enter key to retain this change!) The address of the remote router must be on the same LAN subnet as the Netopia 3366 LAN interface.
  4. Esc back to the Quick Menu screen.

Step B: Configuring your Backup

Conclusion

You have now configured your 3366-ENT router for Backup redundancy.
