Network Address Translation Setup

NQG_085

This Quick Guide will show you how to enable Network Address Translation in your Netopia router.

Please Note: If your router is currently running Netopia Residential Firmware with a web "GUI" configuration menu, this technote is not applicable to you. Most 3300 Series Netopia Gateways can be upgraded to Enterprise level firmware. Click Here! to purchase the upgrade key.

Firmware References:

  • v8.2 R1 (and up) - 3300 Enterprise Series
  • v5.3.7   (and up) - 4000 Series
  • v4.8.2   (and up) - R-Series

Before You Start

Telnet into the Netopia router's Main Menu at 192.168.1.1 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly. Click Here! for instructions on using telnet and Hyperterminal (serial connection).

Login with the user name and password. The Superuser login is required to save changes. If you are unsure of this, contact your network administrator.

Don't forget to press the Enter key to save any entries. Hitting the back space, delete or tab without first hitting enter will undo any changes.

The Esc key will take you back towards the main menu screen.

Once you have completed your configuration, you should reboot the Netopia to save and apply your changes.

The Netopia Main Menu Interface

Configuration for NAT

  1. From the Main Menu, go to Quick Menus -> Change Connection Profiles.
  2. Select your internet connection profile. This profile may be called Easy Setup Profile, Smart Start Profile or any other name you or your service provider have chosen.
  3. Please Note: If your router is a Netopia Ethernet-to-Ethernet router:

    • Go into WAN Configuration --> WAN (Wide Area Network) Setup...
    • Toggle (Tab key) Address Translation to Yes and press enter.
This is the factory default setting.
    • Escape out to the main menu and continue at Step #5 below.
  4. Select IP Profile Parameters -> Address Translation Enabled. Use the TAB key to toggle the Address Translation field to Yes and press Enter.
  5. Press the Esc key. If you are on version 4.8 or later firmware you will need to hit enter on Commit to commit your changes.
  6. If you are on a firmware version below 4.8 you will need to press Esc one more time to return to the Quick Menus screen.
  7. Select IP Setup from the Quick Menus screen.
  8. Remove your existing Ethernet IP address from the Ethernet IP Address: field and your Subnet Mask from the Ethernet Subnet Mask: field by highlighting the information, using the Backspace key and hitting Enter. Be certain to record this information before doing so.
  9. Assign the Router an Ethernet IP address and Subnet Mask of your choice. It is recommended that you use private, non-routable addresses reserved by the National Internet Committee (NIC) (192.168.1.x, 10.x.x.x or 172.16-32.x.x ranges).
  10. Esc once to the Quick Menus screen.
  11. If you wish to use the router's DHCP server select IP Address Serving Setup and configure your the router's DHCP server accordingly.
  12. Escape back to the main menu and select Utilities and Diagnostics - > Restart System.
  13. You will now need to configure the TCP/IP properties of your workstations to reflect your new addressing scheme.

Conclusion

Your router is now configured for Network Address Translation. Keep in mind that if you have servers that need to be accessed remotely, or are using applications that require port mapping through NAT additional configuration will be required.

  • To map an individual port/service from the Wan IP (or other routed IP) to a private Ethernet address see Quick Guide NQG_025 to set up a Server List entry
  • To map all ports from a routed IP (other than the WAN IP) to a private Ethernet address see Quick Guide NQG_024 to setup Static IP Mapping.
  • If you need valid public IP addresses defined on your workstations or servers and you are being routed a block of IP addresses (on a different subnet than your WAN IP) Quick Guide NQG_042 to set up Transparent IP Mapping.
