This technote is applicable if the following is correct:
- You are running Windows OS version 95/98, 2000 or XP
- Your Netopia router has already been configured and is connected to the Internet.
- You have already configured the TCP/IP properties of your workstation's Ethernet adapter, and you are able to communicate with your router (via either telnet or ping). If not, you will first need to refer to the Netopia Quick Guide Getting Started
Please Note: If your router is currently running Netopia Residential Firmware with a web "GUI" configuration menu, this technote is not applicable to you. Most 3300 Series Netopia Gateways can be upgraded to Enterprise level firmware. Click Here! to purchase the upgrade key.
Firmware References:
- v8.2 R1 (and up) - 3300 Enterprise Series
- v5.3.7 (and up) - 4000 Series
- v4.8.2 (and up) - R-Series
Telnet into the Netopia router's Main Menu at 192.168.1.1 (if using the default IP setting). If your network has a different IP addressing scheme, modify this accordingly. Click Here! for instructions on using telnet and Hyperterminal (serial connection).
Login with the user name and password. The Superuser login is required to save changes. If you are unsure of this, contact your network administrator.
Don't forget to press the Enter key to save any entries. Hitting the back space, delete or tab without first hitting enter will undo any changes.
The Esc key will take you back towards the main menu screen.
Once you have completed your configuration, you should reboot the Netopia to save and apply your changes.

- If you have Windows 95/98 or 2000:
- From your computer desktop, go to the Start Menu.
- Select Settings --> Control Panel.
- Double-click on Internet Options.
- If you have Windows XP:
- Select Start Menu --> Control Panel
- Select Network and Internet connections
- Select Setup or change your Internet connection

Windows XP screen only - From the Internet Properties screen, select the Connections tab.
The screen should appear similar to the screen below:
- Choose Never dial a connection, as shown above, if you are no longer using modem dial-up profiles.
If you still wish to use your modem, choose Dial whenever a network connection is not present instead. - Next, choose the LAN Settings tab and you should see the following screen:

- DO NOT select Use a Proxy Server. If the option is selected, and you are connecting through to a proxy server for Internet access (not directly to your Netopia router), you will need to contact Microsoft for proxy server support issues.
- Now select OK and Apply so whatever changes you made to your Internet Properties will be saved.
- Finally, close out of any active browser sessions and relaunch your Internet browser.
You should have now successfully configured your Windows Internet Properties to connect via a LAN for Internet browsing.
