How to Configure a Filter Set to Prevent Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) Traffic From Keeping Up an Internet Connection

NQG_016

This quickquide describes how to configure a filter set that prevents IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) traffic from keeping up a dial-up internet connection.

Assumptions:

  • This guide assumes that you are running Netopia router firmware version 3.1.3 or later. To update your router firmware, go to our firmware update page.

Before you start

  • Establish a serial connection to the Netopia router's console using a communications program such as HyperTerminal or Z-Term. The settings should be 9600 Baud, 8 Data Bits, and 1 Stop Bit. Disable flow control. Alternatively, you can use Telnet over your LAN to get to the console screens.

Tips:

  • Do not change any settings other than the ones referred to below.
  • Pressing Return takes you into a page, pressing Escape takes you out.
  • Press Return after entering each setting to save it.

Step-by-step configuration:

Use standard troubleshooting procedures to determine that your connection is, in fact, being kept open by IGMP packets coming from your ISP. See the Technote NIR_051: Dial up Connections Failing to Disconnect.

  1. Go to System Configuration > Filter Sets (Firewalls) > IP Filter Sets > Add IP Filter Set.
  2. Type a name for the Filter Set, such as IGMP Block, press Enter.
  3. Select Add IP Input Filter, press Enter.
  4. Arrow key down to Protocol Type and type "2" (no quotes) and press Enter. This is the protocol number for IGMP.
  5. The cursor will move to Add This Filter Now, Press Enter. Since this is the only filter we need for this Filter Set, arrow key down to Add Filter Set and press Enter.
  6. Press escape repeatedly until you get to the Main Menu, select Quick Menus > Change Connection Profile.
  7. Press Enter to access the profile screens. Select IP Profile Parameters, press Enter.
  8. Select Filter Set, press Enter and you should have a selection for IGMP Block (or whatever name you gave the Filter Set that you just created).
  9. Select this filter set and press enter. This will activate the filter set on the next Internet connection made by the Netopia.

The Filter Set that you have created will prevent IGMP packets from keeping your Internet connection open.
