Netopia Router Serial Port and AUX Port Cable Pinouts

NIR_042

This describes the pinouts from the Netopia Routers AUX port to a V.35 or DB25 pin cable.

Problem

The Netopia R-Series Routers and PN-Series models PN460 and PN660 have an AUX port which can be used in synchronous or asynchronous mode. Synchronous mode will allow the Netopia R-5100 to be connected to an external DSU and leased line, where as asynchronous mode will allow the Netopia Router to be connected to an external analog or ISDN modem. On the D7100 model, please note that only a V.35 connection can be used. This Technical Note describes the pinouts for both a synchronous and an asynchronous cable.

Parameters

Below is a list of hardware and firmware loads that this Technical Note is based upon:

Hardware Software/Version Installed Options
R-5100 Serial Router 4.8.2 & later AUX port
R-Series Router 4.8.2 & later Serial and AUX ports
PN460 or PN660 3.2 Serial and AUX port

Network Configuration

None.

Background

In order to attach a standard DSU with a V.35 interface to the Netopia Router's HD15 pin AUX port, an HD15 to V.35 pin cable must be used. To attach a standard analog or ISDN modem with a DB25 pin port to the Netopia Routers HD15 pin AUX port, an HD15 to DB25 pin cable must be used.

The HD15 to V.35 cable can be purchased from Netopia Customer Service with the part number of TE6/V.35, and the HD15 to DB25 cable can be purchased from Netopia Customer Service as well with the part number of TE6/DB25. However, either of these cables can be custom built with the schematics below.

Also, the serial, or Console port on R-Series and 4000 Series Netopia routers will accommodate the male end of a null-modem DB9 serial cable. This port will allow serial access into the router configuration menus. This cable ships with your new Netopia router, and is readily available at most computer supply stores. The specifications are detailed below.

Configuration

Below are the pinouts for both the HD15 to DB25 and HD15 to V.35 pin cable for the Netopia Routers AUX port:

NOTE: The resistor on Pin #6 should be 1300 ohms.
