Below is a list of hardware and firmware loads that this Technical Note is based upon:

Situation

In order to facilitate the functionality of MSN Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger, Netopia has incorporated an ALG (Application Layer Gateway) into the firmware versions and hardware platforms listed above.

For MSN Messenger these applications are:

1. XP Application Suite:
   • Audio
   • Audio/Video
   • Application Sharing
   • Remote Assistance
   • File Transfer
   • NetMeeting (to/from Windows 98)
2. 98 / ME / 2000 Suite
   • Audio
   • NetMeeting
   • File Transfer

The AOL Instant Messenger ALG allows file transfer through NAT. AOL Chat and Messaging function normally through NAT, so this ALG is neutral on this feature.

In firmware version 5.3.8R1, you can view the nat alg configuration by going into the Command Line Interface and entering show config ip nat alg at the # prompt. The alg(s) can be disabled here if necessary. For additional information on using CLI commands, see Netopia Command Line Interface Commands Reference.

Please Note: Support for CLI disabling of the NAT ALG is only available in firmware version 5.3.8R1 or later.
