This is how to configure a Macintosh running Open Transport in conjunction with the Netopia Router.
The Netopia Router offers a variety of built-in Address Serving Protocols, such as Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) and Macintosh Internet Protocol (MacIP), among others. These protocols distribute IP Addresses to Macs or PC workstations on a LAN or from a Dial-Up Terminal Adapter. The purpose of this technote is to provide instructions for configuring the TCP/IP Control Panel of a Mac workstation running Open Transport in order to connect to a Netopia Router.
List of hardware, firmware, and part numbers of equipment in this Technical Note.
| Hardware | Software/Firmware | Installed Options |
| Any Netopia Router | 3.1.3 or later | None |
| Macintosh | Open Transport 1.1 or above |
Below is a diagram of the network configuration that will be referenced in this Technical Note.
The Netopia Router supports the following Address Serving Protocols:
- DHCP - The Netopia Router serves dynamic IP addresses to LAN ethernet computers.
- BOOTP - Bootstrap Protocol is a predecessor to DHCP and it assigns addresses in a similar manner.
- MacIP (AppleTalk) - The Netopia Router acts as the MacIP Gateway for LAN LocalTalk computers.
- WANIP - The Netopia Router serves IP addresses to Dial-In clients using the PPP protocol. These Mac clients will be using Open Transport/PPP or FreePPP. See Netopia Technote NIR-016 for how to configure a Netopia Router to accept a connection from a dial-in Terminal Adapter (TA).
Please refer to your Netopia Reference Guide for instructions on setting up Netopia's IP Address Server.
Below is a table that gives you the information you need to enter into the TCP/IP Control Panel of your Macintosh, depending on what type of addressing you are using.
| TCP/IP Option | Network Type | TCP/IP Setting | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ethernet | LocalTalk | Enter IP Address | Enter Subnet Mask1 | Enter Router Address1 | Enter DNS Address1 | |
| Manually | yes | NA | yes | yes | yes | yes |
| DHCP | yes | NA | no | no | no | no |
| BootP | yes | NA | no | no | no | no |
| AppleTalk (MacIP) using MacIP manually3 | NA | yes | yes | no | yes2 | yes |
| AppleTalk (MacIP) using MacIP Server | NA | yes | no | no | no2 | yes |
| PPP/ FreePPP | NA | NA | no4 | no | no | yes |
1Select Advanced user mode from the TCP/IP Edit Menu in order to enter this information. The Subnet Mask is the Ethernet Subnet Mask of your network. The Router Address is the Ethernet IP Address of the Netopia Router. The Domain Name Server (DNS) Addresses are provided by your Internet Service Provider. For more details on what these addresses are, please look at the Netopia's IP Setup.
2If there is more than one AppleTalk zone in your network, then you will have to select the LocalTalk Zone that the Netopia Router is associated with (for details on LocalTalk Setup see the Netopia Reference Guide). In the TCP/IP Control Panel you can choose this LocalTalk zone by clicking the "Select Zone..." button.
3This option is only available with the PN440/640 Netopia Router Models.
4Some Internet Service Providers offer accounts with a static or dedicated address, in which case, you will enter the address they have provided.
Below are screen shots showing examples of the different configurations. Refer to the Table for instructions on configuring these screens. Please note that the network information and TCP/IP addresses given in this Technical Note are for example purposes only and should not be used for connecting to your router.

Configuring your Macintosh computer for TCP/ IP connectivity through a Netopia Router is simply a matter of deciding which type of addressing is appropriate for the computer and entering IP Address information that has already been used to configure the Netopia. For additional information about address serving protocols and setting up the Netopia's Address Serving Features, please refer to the Netopia Router Reference Guide. For more information regarding setting up a remote Terminal Adapter to dial into a Netopia Router, refer to technote NIR-016 "TA to Netopia Router" . You may also find the technote NIR-018 "DHCP/ MacIP Behavior" helpful in understanding these addressing protocols.
