Below is a list of hardware and firmware loads that this Technical Note is based upon:
| Hardware | Firmware/Version | Interface |
| Cayman 3220 | 5.6.2 - 6.3.0 R7 | Classic or Netopia |
| Cayman 2E Ethernet | 5.6.2 - 6.3.0 R7 | Classic or Netopia |
- You are running a current firmware version applicable to your model of router as outlined above. Click Here to go to the Netopia and Cayman firmware upgrade page.
- This guide assumes that you are configuring this device for the first time or that the router has been reset to factory default.
NOTE: If this router has been pre-configured by the telco or your service provider, it is unlikely that the information contained in this Quick Guide will be applicable to you. Please contact the service provider before making any changes in the parameters programmed into this device.
- Gather all of your ATM Encapsulation & IP information from your ISP. This will include:
- Encapsulation Information
- VPI/VCI
- WAN IP Address (static IP)
- Subnet Mask
- Default Gateway
- ISP Username & Password (PPPoE)
- Domain Name
- DNS #'s (Primary & Secondary)
- Make sure that the computer you are using is connected directly to the router.
- Out of the box, the Cayman router is a DHCP server. Make sure the computer's TCP/IP properties are set to obtain an IP address automatically from the router.
- Be sure to remove any Gateway IP's you have installed and disable DNS. (Please contact your Network Administrator if assistance is needed).
- Once you have obtained an IP address from the Cayman, you are ready to browse into the router. If you did not obtain an address from the router dynamically, assign the workstation an address of 192. 168. 1. [x], [x] being any number between 1 and 253, and a subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. The gateway is 192.168.1.254, the default IP address of the Cayman Ethernet interface.
- Click Here! for detailed instructions for connecting to the router from your computer.
PLEASE NOTE: Part One of this Quick Guide references configurations for a typical PPPoE account with firmware version 6.3.x (or later).
For Part Two, Click Here to see configuration instructions if your internet account uses a Static IP address on the public WAN.
If your Cayman router has firmware prior to COS 6.3, go directly to Basic Configuration in COS 5.6.2
Caution: If the ISP or other service provider has preconfigured your router, it probably isn't necessary to do Basic Configuration on the router. However, if you plan to do configuration on the router, be sure that you have accurate information as regards your account parameters from the service provider. Otherwise you may be unable to readily establish your internet connection.
- Browse into the Cayman router.
- In the upper menu bar, click on Configure.

- Click on the Quickstart link.
- The values on this screen are typically preconfigured by the ISP.
- If these fields are blank, you will not be able to log onto the internet until you have confirmed the information from your ISP and entered it here.
- Click on the Submit button to save these entries (even if they were already filled in).
- Click on Configure in the menu bar to return to the configuration options.
- Click on WAN.
- Click on ATM under Other WAN Options.
- In the ATM Circuits box:

PLEASE NOTE: These are crucial values that are supplied by your service provider.

Setting this field to None will allow remote access into the router, but you still must enter the Admin level password to make and save changes. If you need technical support from Netopia or your ISP, you may be asked to set this value to None, but it is advisable to otherwise set this to Admin Disabled. Click here for additional details and instructions.
