Lost Password - Resetting to Factory Defaults

CQG_102

If you have lost the password to your Netopia Internet Gateway, or just need to reset it to factory default settings before reconfiguration, you will need to follow the directions in this Quick Guide.

Please Note: Once you have reset the Netopia Gateway, all of your WAN and LAN connection information and settings will be lost, not just the password. The gateway must be reconfigured before you will be able to access the internet. Once reset, the ethernet (LAN) address of the router will be 192.168.1.254 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. An Enterprise router will have an IP Address of 192.168.1.1.

Notice

The use of the instructions given in this Quick Guide pertain primarily to resetting the router via a communications program such as HyperTerminal. This requires the use of a standard male-to-female DB-9 straight through serial cable. This cable can be obtained readily from any computer supply retailer.

The exception to this is on the 3300 Series of Netopia routers. This new generation of internet gateways has a physical reset button.

NOTE: The physical layer instructions outlined in this Quick Guide are NOT applicable to a MacIntosh Computer, only to a PC com port. However, certain USB adapters are available for the Macintosh platform that allow for the use of a serial cable connection. Contact your Macintosh supplier for further information.

Part I: Netopia 3300 Series Gateways and Smart Modems

The Netopia 3300 Series routers do not have a Maintenance Console for a serial connection. On the back panel of the device, you will see the Off/On Switch, the Power Port for attaching the supplied power adapter and a small hole with a rubber "button" inside of it. This is the Reset Button.

3300 Reset

  1. Using the tip of a pen or an unfolded paperclip, carefully depress this switch momentarily. This should be done with the router powered up.
  2. Caution: Do Not keep the button depressed for more than a brief moment. You can "feel" the click. Keeping the button depressed too long can erase necessary circuit configuration for the ISP default settings.
  3. Restart the router.
  4. You will now have a default ethernet IP address of 192.168.1.254 (unless otherwise specified by your ISP).

Part II: Netopia 3500 Series Internet Gateway

Establish Serial Connection
  1. Attach the female end of the serial cable securely to an available COM port on your PC.
  2. Looking at the rear panel of the Netopia router, you will see the female port for the DB-9 connector labeled MAINTENANCE CONSOLE left-of-center on the back panel.
  3. Attach the male end of the serial cable securely to this port.
  4. Make sure the router's power supply is plugged in and the router is powered up.
  5. Establish the HyperTerminal connection to the router.
  6. Port Settings should be set to:
    1. Bits per second = 9600
    2. Data bits = 8
    3. Parity = None
    4. Stop bits = 1
    5. Flow control = None
  7. Unplug the router and plug it back in to bring up the hyperterminal session.
Resetting the Unit with a Password Configured in the Router
  1. At the log-in prompt, again unplug the router power supply and plug it back in.
  2. As the Netopia is restarting, you will see a message on the screen similar to:
    • Boot PROM Console v1.2
    • Cayman-3546 serial no. 123456 (bootflags 0x1000000)
    • STAY IN EPROM?
  3. When you see STAY IN EPROM? come on the screen, IMMEDIATELY hit the y key several times.
  4. This will bring you to BootPROM>
  5. Type in erase options and hit ENTER.
  6. You will be prompted "Are you sure?" Type y or yes .
  7. The options will now be erased; type reset or boot to save the settings.
  8. The router has now been reset to the factory default settings.
Resetting the Unit with No Password Configured in the Router
  1. At the Cayman prompt, type clear
  2. At the yes or no prompt, type yes
  3. The router will clear its configuration.
  4. Type restart to save the settings.
  5. The router has now been reset to the factory default settings.

Conclusion

After following the above procedure and rebooting, your Netopia will be reverted to a factory default state. The ethernet IP address will now be 192.168.1.254. Telnet or web browser access back into the Netopia can be readily acheived by setting your computer's TCP/IP settings to obtain its IP address dynamically from the gateway.
