Does Timbuktu Pro for Windows support modem-to-modem connections between two Windows machines, or between a Macintosh and a Windows PC?

Timbuktu Pro supports connections between any two Macintosh or Windows machines; you can connect from Mac to Mac, Mac to PC, PC to PC, or PC to Mac. However, Timbuktu Pro for Windows does NOT have a built in serial protocol for direct modem-to-modem connections like the Direct Dial protocol that ships with Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh. The Windows version can run over TCP/IP (the Internet protocol) or IPX (the Novell/Netware protocol); please note, Timbuktu Pro does not support IPX in Windows NT. In order for a Windows PC to communicate with a remote machine, you can use one of the PPP dial-up solutions mentioned below, or the Internet.

Remote access via a PPP connection, will allow you to transmit IP or IPX traffic over a modem (or ISDN) line. In order to accomplish this you will need a PPP Client installed on your machine and a PPP Server at the remote location you will be dialing in to.

Windows 95 and Windows NT machines have a built-in PPP client called Dial-Up Networking. For Windows machines without PPP clients (such as Windows 3.1 and 3.11), Timbuktu Pro for Windows 1.1 comes with the Shiva PPP Client. Shiva Remote for Windows PPP Client is also available free from their website at www.shiva.com.

Most PPP Servers are hardware based such as a Shiva LAN Rover or Sonic Quick Stream. There are a few software PPP servers such as the Windows NT Remote Access Server (RAS) and Apple Remote Access (ARA) 3.0 Personal Server that accept PPP calls from Mac and PC platforms. If you are running Windows 95, one possible solution is the Windows 95 RAS that comes in the Plus! Pack. It can be used to establish a remote IP connection from one Windows 95 machine to another Windows 95 machine.

As mentioned above, another alternative is to use the Internet. The Mac and Windows versions of Timbuktu Pro support TCP/IP, so as long as both machines are connected to the Internet and you know the IP address of the remote machine, you can access it using Timbuktu Pro. You will need a licensed copy of the appropriate Timbuktu for Mac or for Windows version on each machine that you wish to connect to.

There are many possible options and variables for configuring PPP connections depending upon the types of machines and operating systems that will be used. We have outlined a few general principles for establishing remote Timbuktu connections between Macs and PCs. Below are some websites with instructions to help you to set up PPP connections and Clients for Windows 95. You should go to Apple's website to find out more about Apple Remote Access 3.0.

Instructions for:

Can I use long file names with Timbuktu Pro for Windows?

Timbuktu Pro for Windows 1.5.4 does not support long file names on the Windows 95 or NT platforms. If files with names longer than the traditional DOS and Windows format are transferred with Timbuktu Pro, these names will be shortened when they arrive on the destination machine. However, the latest release, Timbuktu Pro 32 for Windows does support long file names on all platforms, including cross platform transfers.

Does Timbuktu Pro for Windows 1.5 support Windows 98?

No. Timbuktu Pro for Windows version 1.x is not compatible with the new Winsock (Version 2) that ships with Windows 98.

Timbuktu Pro 32 supports Windows 98.

Does Timbuktu Pro for Windows 1.5 support IPX in Windows NT?

In this release, NetWare support is disabled for systems running NT. IPX continues to be supported in Windows 95, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and Windows 3.1.

Can Timbuktu Pro for Windows run on the DEC Alpha platform?

At present Timbuktu Pro only supports the Windows OS running on Intel and Intel compatible chip sets. Netopia has made no announcements regarding other platforms at the present time.

Will Timbuktu Pro for Windows v1.5 run in the year 2000?

The Timbuktu Pro for Windows 1.5.x has no known issues with the year 2000 and can be installed on Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows NT machines.

Does Timbuktu Pro support encryption?

Since Timbuktu Pro is a set of services that runs on top of the protocol layer, it is fully compatible with any third party LAN based encryption schemes (Virtual Private Networks) or connection protocols such as PPTP. Passwords are encrypted and connections are established using a challenge and response protocol. Timbuktu Pro also provides a comprehensive activity log for monitoring activity. None of the services are encrypted by Timbuktu Pro. However, in the case of Control and Observe, the data is highly tokenized and would require a non-trivial effort to reassemble into useful data. We have never had a reported case of Timbuktu Control or Observe sessions being captured.

What does the GINA.DLL do?

GINA provides interactive logon support for Microsoft Windows NT. This replaceable functionality is implemented as a dynamic-link library (DLL) that is loaded and called by Winlogon.exe. This DLL is referred to as the Graphical Identification and Authentication DLL, or GINA for short. GINA lets developers implement authentication mechanisms in place of the standard Windows NT username/password authentication.

GINA.DLL can replace MSGINA.DLL (the standard shipped with Windows NT) which is loaded and called by Winlogon.exe. Winlogon uses a special sequence of events, the Secure Attention Sequence (SAS), to recognize when a user wants to log on to or perform other secure operations. The SAS for a standard Windows NT system is the CTRL+ALT+DEL key combination. This prompts Winlogon to switch to a secure desktop that no trojan horse program has access to.

What does TB2GINA.DLL do?

TB2Gina.dll is Timbuktu Pro's own version of GINA for secure desktop functioning. In some cases, Timbuktu may crash if this file is not properly installed or if there are conflicts with other Gina.dll files (see Technote TPWN_007).
TB2Gina.dll is used so that you can:

  • Use Ctrl-Alt-Del to login when controlling other machines
  • Restore wallpaper correctly
  • Have the screen blanking feature lock a workstation after disconnecting from a control session

How can I perform a remote shut down of a Windows 95 PC?

The current version of Timbuktu Pro for Windows 1.5.4 supports Windows 95 Remote reboot and Auto reboot. Earlier versions do not support this function with Windows 95, but will perform remote shutdowns of NT machines. To send Ctrl+Alt+Del from a Windows machine running Timbuktu Pro Windows: Go to the Control Hand icon in the upper left corner of the screen-sharing window. From the drop-down menu, select "Send Ctrl+Alt+Del to Remote Computer".

How do I send "\" in a DOS box with an International Keyboard?

International users should use "ALT+092" to send "\" in a DOS Window.

NT Login and Connection Issues

How do I send the Control+Alt+Delete commmand to a Windows NT machine?

Ctrl+Alt+Del allows you to log in to a remote Windows NT machine. If you are connecting from a Windows host, then you need to have Timbuktu Pro for Windows NT 1.5 installed on the machine. Upgrades from Timbuktu Pro for Windows 1.1 are available on the Netopia website.

To send Ctrl+Alt+Del to a remote NT or Windows 95 machine, go to the menu in the upper left corner of the screen-sharing window. Select "Send Ctrl+Alt+Del to Remote Computer".

Can I use Novell's single login with Timbuktu Pro for Windows?

Yes, there is no problem using Novell's single login with Timbuktu Pro for Windows.

Can I use Lotus Notes Custom login with Timbuktu Pro for Windows?

Currently, Lotus Notes Custom login with Timbuktu Pro for Windows is not supported. Please see Technote TPWN_008 for more information.

Can I have more than one Observer of a Windows host?

At present, a Timbuktu Pro for Windows host can only support one Control or Observe session at a time. A Macintosh host can support multiple connections. Netopia is investigating possible solutions for this, but we are currently limited by differences in the Windows architecture.

Can I access Timbuktu nodes that are located behind a firewall?

Yes. However, in order for Timbuktu Pro to work through a firewall, UDP port 407 and TCP ports 1417 through 1420 must be open. Timbuktu Pro uses UDP port 407 for connection handshaking and then switches to the TCP ports for Timbuktu Services: Control (1417), Observe (1418), Send (1419), and Exchange (1420). As with most IP communication, the response packets are in the dynamic range 1023. If you cannot successfully connect with another Timbuktu host, the network manager may need to reconfigure the firewall permissions to permit the above TCP and UDP port assignments. For more information see Technote: Firewalls and Timbuktu Pro.

Can I use Timbuktu through a proxy server?

No. Timbuktu does not work with proxy servers.

How do I know the TCP/IP address of a machine that gets a dynamic address from a DHCP server?

Microsoft has a service called WINS that allows you to use a fixed, text based, machine name that is mapped to the dynamically assigned DHCP address. Typically a DHCP server is also configured for WINS. Timbuktu Pro can use the WINS name in the address book just like an IP address as long as WINS is properly configured to resolve the names.

WINS ships with Microsoft NT Server. For more information on WINS see Microsoft's White Paper, or go to the Microsoft Knowledge Base and search for Article ID: Q173161, Q160828, and Q154553.

If you are unable to use WINS then the remote user will have to tell you what their IP address is. It should be listed at the bottom of "User Access Privileges" from the Setup menu in Timbuktu Pro. They can also display their current address by going to a DOS prompt and typing "winipcfg" if they're running Windows 95 or "ipconfig" if Windows NT.

Why do I get an Error Message:"No DNS entry" when I try to reach a Timbuktu test machine at Netopia, Inc.?

You are trying to observe/look at one of our Timbuktu test machines and the address is machinename.farallon.com (e.g., timbuktu.farallon.com). You get the error message "no DNS entry." To resolve this issue, change the address to machinename.netopia.com. Due to company organizational changes, our DNS is now pointing to the new domain name of netopia.com instead of the old domain of farallon.com. For background information about changes in our company organization, go to the corporate information section of our company web site.

Troubleshooting

Why do I get a White Screen when I Control or Observe an NT PC?

Generally users get a White Screen during a Control or Observe session on an NT PC because of an incomplete installation or a compatibility issue with the installed video driver. Timbuktu Pro adds KVWedge or VWedge to the video driver information in the Registry and sometimes the Registry does not get updated correctly. Please see Technote TPWN_003 for instructions on updating or editing the Registry entries. You should also make sure that you are using a compatible video card with the latest drivers. Please see the readme file for a list of compatible cards.

Why do I get a Blue Screen after installing Timbuktu Pro for Windows and rebooting an NT PC?

Generally users get a Blue Screen after rebooting an NT PC due to incomplete installation or conflicts with the video driver or another gina.dll file. Please see Technote TPWN_007 for instructions on updating or editing the Registry entries for video drivers and gina.dll files. You should also make sure that you are using a compatible video card with the latest drivers. Please see the readme file for a list of compatible cards.
