What is the correct way to upgrade my build of Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh?

The suggested way to upgrade is as follows:

  1. Drag the existing Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh application to the Trash.
  2. Drag the new Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh application to the Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh folder.
  3. Restart.

Can Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh be installed on all Macintosh OS's?

No. This software is designed to run on OS 8.6 - 9.2.x and MacOS X build 10.0.4 or higher. It will not run under the MacOS X Public Beta.

Can I connect to/from older versions of Timbuktu Pro?

Yes. Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh can connect to other Timbuktu Pro versions. This software is backwards to Timbuktu Pro v4.8 on the Macintosh and Timbuktu Pro 2000 on the Windows.

How come, after running the Applescript to change the contact port, Timbuktu Pro does not recognize it's new port?

After running the Applescript to change the contact port that Timbuktu Pro uses, your OS X requires that you toggle TCP/IP Incoming Access off and on (Setup:Preferences:Incoming Access). After you re-enable TCP/IP incoming access, Timbuktu Pro will now reflect the new port

How come everytime I launch Timbuktu Pro, it requires an Admin password?

If you have the preference for "only accept incoming connections when application is open" (Setup:Preferences:General) selected, this will require you to login every single time you launch Timbuktu Pro. This is because the Timbuktu host requires "root" privileges in order to launch Timbuktu Pro and accept inbound connections.

Why is AppleTalk Missing?

Apple, now with OS X, is trying to minimize the use of Appletalk and increase the use of the TCP/IP protocol. Due to this limited Appletalk support in OS X for just printers and AppleShare file servers, Timbuktu Pro did not have the resources available to continue Appletalk Support as well.

Why do I get an error message stating "An operating system of OS X or higher is required"?

Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh requires OS X build 10.0.4 or higher. Any other builds lower than build 10.0.4, including the OS X beta version, will display this message. You will need to upgrade to your operating system for Timbuktu Pro to install.

How do I install Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh ?

The Timbuktu Pro installation file you download is a binhexed, stuffed disk image file. Use Stuffit Expander to un-binhex it, and then double-click the file to mount it. Then drag the Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh folder from the disk image to your MacOS X Applications folder.

When you initially launch Timbuktu Pro, you will be asked for your administrator username and password. You must be logged in as an administrator to install Timbuktu Pro.

How do I uninstall Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh ?

In order to uninstall you will have to take the following steps:

  1. Log on to your Macintosh as an administrator.
  2. Drag the Timbuktu Pro application to the trash.
  3. Optionally, open the Mac OS X volume, open the Library folder, open the StartupItems folder, and drag the TimbuktuStartup folder to the trash. Also within Library:Preferences, trash the Netopia preferences folder.
  4. Restart your computer.

Where do I place the modified TCP/IP zones file?

Once the file has been created, you need to install it in your OS X system in library:preferences:netopia.
Note: On OS X, if you try to save the TCP/IP Zones file with a Cocoa application such as Text Edit, the application will not let you put a "/" in the name. You will need to create this file on a classic application for success.

Why do I get a black screen when attempting to connect to my OS X host?

If you have energy saver turned on on a host machine, you will be unable to connect via Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh once the host goes into any kind of power-saving mode. If the host computer has gone to sleep, a Timbuktu Pro guest can connect, but will only see a black window. The guest cannot wake up the host. This is due to a limitation in the OS.

To avoid this, make sure Energy Saver is FULLY DISABLED. If you want to protect your screen from burn-in, use the Screen-Saver control panel instead. If you want to save electricity, just power off your monitor manually.

Does Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh support long file names during an Exchange and Send session?

Yes. MacOS X allows you to use file names up to 255 characters long. This includes both Exchange and Send services.

How come during a Control session to an OS X host, I sometimes get double characters?

When you control a MacOS X host, your keystrokes are often repeated. To avoid this, open the Keyboard panel in the System Preferences and set Delay Until Repeat to Long.

How come Timbuktu Pro disconnects my session when I log off the host system?

If you are controlling a MacOS X machine, and log out, the connection will drop. However, you can immediately re-connect to log back in. This is due to limitations of the OS.

Can Timbuktu Pro be launched simultaneously in the classic environment and OS X?

Although there is nothing preventing you from launching both simultaneously, you will get poor functionality of Timbuktu Pro in the classic environment. It is because of this that Netopia does not support Timbuktu Pro running in the classic environment

Why do I get a TCP/IP error message when attempting to enable TCP/IP incoming access?

If you attempt to enable TCP/IP incoming access on one operating system while it is enabled on the other, you might receive the following error message:

Timbuktu Pro could not enable incoming TCP/IP access. Please check the TCP/IP configuration.

After restarting, switch incoming access

o On
o Off (avoids this alert)

Because one operating system is attempting to listen in on UDP port 407, enabling the other Timbuktu Pro will cause this error message since the port is in use. This issue within Timbuktu Pro is directly due to a problem in the classic environment within OS X. The issue is that when a classic application on Mac OS X closes a UDP port, the classic environment doesn't release it for other applications to use. Forcing the classic process to stop, frees up the port.

Note: If you are running OS 10.1 and v6.0, you will also get this error message. This problem has been resolved in Timbuktu Pro v6.0.1.

The workaround is to disable TCP/IP incoming access on the other version of Timbuktu Pro.

Why after upgrading do I have multiple Personal Address Books?

Often when an upgrade is not done correctly, multiple address books can appear. Having multiple address books does not have any negative effect on the performance of Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh. However, if you are wishing to get rid of one of them, simply go into Applications:Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh and move one of the address books to the trash. After reboot, you should only have one listed.

How come after uninstalling and reinstalling does Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh not startup automatically after a restart?

Sometimes after uninstalling and reinstalling Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh, it does not startup automatically after restarting. In order to remedy this, launch Timbuktu Pro. Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh should detect that the Timbuktu startup items have not been installed. This should cause Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh to self install those components. After restarting again, Timbuktu Pro for Macintosh should then startup automatically.

How can I run the Applescript to change the Timbuktu Pro port without OS X launching the classic environment?

In order to run the Applescript, to change the Timbuktu Pro port used, properly, you must first launch Timbuktu Pro. This can be done by going to the Timbuktu connection menu icon and choosing "Open Timbuktu Pro". Once this is done, you can run the Applescript successfully.

Why do I get an error message stating that my Timbuktu Pro is corrupt when I'm attempting to upgrade my version?

If you are upgrading from the Preview version to the final release version of Timbuktu Pro, you must first completely uninstall the preview release first. This can be done by taking the following steps:

  • Log on to your Macintosh as an administrator.
  • Drag the Timbuktu Pro application to the trash.
  • Optionally, open the Mac OS X volume, open the Library folder, open the StartupItems folder, and drag the TimbuktuStartup folder to the trash.
