CIR_100: BellSouth Interim Password Procedure

This Technote is a reference for the global changes to the BellSouth network as it affects the use of Cayman-Series routers.

Situation:

BellSouth, your ADSL carrier, has made global changes in its network. This change will require that you browse into the configuration menu and make an important change to the ATM Circuit selection. If you are unable to access the configuration screens of the Cayman due to the password configured in the router, you can access this using the "Interim Password" procedure.

For obvious security reasons, we have outlined a process that will allow you to gain access into the router while assuring that only the authorized user has this information. We apologize for the long wait in the Netopia Customer Service queue as we are experiencing extremely heavy call volume. Hopefully this procedure will help expedite getting access into the router for these changes.

Firmware Requirements:

This technote applies to the Cayman-Series router Model 3220-H running firmware version 6.3.0 R2 and earlier. If you are running the current Cayman firmware, version 6.3.0 R7, this technote will not be applicable to you. In the event you have current version firmware and you do not know the router password, you will need to follow a different procedure as outlined in CIR_006. Click Here for CIR_006 instructions for the Challenge-Response password procedure.

After you have gained access to the programming menus of the router, it would be advisable to reference CQG_121: Configuring Your Cayman ADSL Router.

Before You Start:

The instructions in this technote refer only to the password for access into the router configuration screens. Any username and password provided by BellSouth will be in reference to your PPP over Ethernet ATM Configuration, the circuit which connects you to the internet.

Procedure:

  1. Make a photocopy of the bottom of the Cayman router. Make certain that the label with the serial number is clearly visible. The S/N is located directly below the barcode at the botttom of the label.
  2. Write the serial number of the router on company letterhead with all of your contact information including a callback phone number.
Alternatively, if the router was installed in a private residence, a copy of the DSL bill with the router serial number indicated on it will suffice.
  3. Fax both of these items to us at (510) 420-7603. We will call you back within an hour with your password information.
  4. Please make certain that each piece of documentation faxed to us includes the serial number for reference.

Final Notes:

Remember, this technote applies to Cayman Series routers on the BellSouth network running firmware version 6.3.0 R2 and earlier.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but we want to insure the integrity of your internet access information while allowing you to make these necessary changes.

Thank you, Netopia Technical Support
